FOREWORD

Special Section on Intelligent Transport Systems

Intelligent transport systems (ITS) have been developed in academia, industry and government all over the world since the 1980s. In 2020, we are entering a “one-in-a-century big innovation period” with the rapid change to the “CASE” which are Connected, Autonomous/Automated, Sharing, and Electric. ITS is also expected to develop into a “Smart/Intelligent City” that connects all the goods and services that support people’s lives.

Due to the limited mobility of people in the Corona (COVID-19) related crisis, a sudden change is occur- ring to new lifestyles such as promotion of telework and so on. ITS is an effective technology to support the movement of people, but it is a good chance to reconsider the mobility and transportation once again.

I hope this special issue will contribute to new development and progress of ITS.

As a result of promoting submissions from collaborative research areas, 11 papers have been submitted and 3 papers have been accepted for the publication in the special issue. The special issue invited Prof. Koji Oguri, Prof. Haruki Kawanaka and Prof. Shintaro Ono to publish an invited paper on Mobility Innovation

“Another CASE” which is an interesting concept from the standpoint of “human centered,” who are users.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the authors of all the submitted papers, reviewers, and editorial committee members for their significant contributions to the special issue. I would like to express special appreciation to Prof. Kenshi Saho as Guest Editor on the Special Section Editorial Committee.
