改 訂 第2版 の 語 法 ・文 法 コ ラ ム に つ い て

1LongmanAdvancedAmericanDictionary(以 下LAADと す る)は ,初 版 が2000 年 に 出 版 さ れ,そ れ か ら7年 を 経 て2007年 に 第2版 が 出 版 さ れ た.Longman社(ピ ア ソ ン ・エ デ ュ ケ ー シ ョ ン 社)の ウ ェ ブ サ イ トに よ る と,Lん4D初 版 は"thefirst trulycorpus‑baseddictionaryofAmericanEnglishattheadvancedlevel"と あ る.LAADはtheLongmanCorpusNetworkを 用 い ,そ の うち,話 し 言 葉 を 集 め たtheLongmanSpokenAmericanCorpus,書 き 言 葉 を 集 め たtheLongman WrittenAmericanCorpus,そ し て 世 界 中 の 英 語 学 習 者 が 用 い た 英 語 か ら な る 学 習 者 コ ー パ ス で あ るtheLongmanLearners'Corpusな ど の デ ー タ に 基 づ い て 編 纂 さ れ

て い る.

両 版 の カバ ー の 記 述 に よ る と,初 版 で は 総 収 録 語84,000語,第2版 で は185 ,000語 で2倍 以 上 に な っ て い る.初 版 で は 新 語 と し てdot‑com ,E.coli,HOVlane,HTML

な ど や,百 科 辞 典 的 な も の と し て,BenjaminFranklin ,RosaParks,Mount

Rushmoreな ど が 掲 載 さ れ て い る.第2版 で は ,学 習 者 が 様 々 な 科 目 を英 語 で 学 ぶ 時 に 役 立 つ よ う な 語 や,科 学 技 術 の 発 展 や,世 界 の 新 た な 出 来 事 や 流 行 を 反 映 す る 語 な ど6,000の 新 し い 語 や 意 味 が つ け 加 え ら れ て い る .例 え ば,absolutevalue,

avianflu,blog,iPod,Sudoku,textmessageな ど で あ る .両 版 共 に定 義 は,利 用 者 が 理 解 し や す い よ う に 基 本 語2,000語 のtheLongmanAmericanDefining

Vocabularyを 用 い て な さ れ て い る.複 数 の 語 義 を も つ 語 に は ,す ば や く検 索 で きる

よう,語 義 を簡 潔 に説 明 した"Signpost"(案 内標 識)が つ け られ てい る.話 し言葉 と 書 き言 葉 にお い て,最 も使 用 頻 度 の 高 い3,000語 に は,そ れ ぞ れ にお け る頻 度 が 数 字 で表 わ され てい る.例 えばS1は 話 し言 葉 にお いて最 も頻 度 の高 い1,000語 に入 り, W2は 書 き言葉 で 最 も頻 度 の 高 い2,000語 に入 ることを表 わす.第2版 で は使 用 頻 度 の 高 い3,000語 が 赤 字 で示 され る ようにな るなど,学 習 者へ の細 や か な配慮 が 伺 え る.

第2版 で とり入 れ られた その他 の特 徴 として,analyzeやconceptな どの語 にAcと い う"AcademicWord"を 意 味 す るラベ ル がつ け られた.こ れ は学 習 者が 学 問 的英 語 を読 み書 きす る上 で 重要 な語 であ る ことを意味 す る.さ らに,happyやmeatな ど の語 に語 源 情 報 が掲 載 され た.こ れ は,語 源 を知 るこ とも学 習者 の語 彙 習 得 に役 立 つ との考 えか らで あ ろうか.例 えば,meatの 語源 は"food"で あ るとい う情 報 か ら, 欧 米 の 食 文 化 や 歴 史 を垣 間 見 る こ と もで き,学 習 者 には役 に立 つ であ ろ う.さ ら

に,第2版 で は,写 真 や 絵 に も差 し替 えや,追 加 が 見 られ る.つ ま り,Earnest Hemingwayの エ ン トリー一な どのい くつ か の歴 史 一hの人 物 の写 真 な どを除 いて,初 版 の 白黒 の もの が 第2版 で カ ラー の もの に差 し替 え られ た り,新 た にecosystemや nitrogencycleな どに見 られ る ように,専 門 的 な語 や コンセ プ トを説 明す るフル カラ

ーの絵 が 追加 され る な ど,視 覚 的 に も,よ り内容 が分 か りや す くなって い る.さ らに 第2版 で は,コ ラムの0層 の充 実 が 見 られ る。初 版 の コラムUSAGENOTEは,第2

版 では,USAGE,GRAMMAR,WORDCHOICEの3つ の タイプに分 け られ た.

さ ら に,第2版 で は,コ ラ ムTHESAURUSが 新 た に 設 け られ て い る.初 版 の USAGENOTEの 項 目でTHESAURUSに 吸収 され た もの もあ る.初 版 で もす で に,

コラムUSAGENOTEの 中 で,項 目によって はGRAMMAR,WORDCHOICE

な どの ようにサ ブ タイ トルが つ け られ て い るもの もあ るが,第2版 で改 め て整 理 され た と言 えよう.WORDCHOICEやTHESAURUSの コラムは,類 義 語 の違 い を つ か む のに非 常 に役 立つ と言 え る.USAGEやGRAMMARの コラムで は,間 違 え やす い語 法 ・文 法t綴 り,礼 儀 語 の丁 寧 さな どにつ いて有 益 な説 明 が な され てい る.

大 まか に 言 え ば,初 版 の コ ラ ムUSAGENOTEの 項 目は,第2版 で は,綴 り,礼 儀 語 の丁 寧 さな どに関す る項 目はUSAGEの コラム に,よ り純 然 た る文法 に関 す る も の がGRAMMARに 分類 され てい るようで あ るが,2つ の タイプの境 界 線 は必 ず し

も 明 確 と は 言 え な い.

LAAD第2版 が 出 版 さ れ た 年 と 同 じ2007年 にCollinsCUBUILDAdvanced

DictionaryofAmericanEnglish(以 下CollinsAE)も 出 版 さ れ た .こ れ はCollins COBUILDが 出 版 す る 初 め て の ア メ リ カ 英 語 辞 典 で あ り,ThomsonELTと 共 同 出 版 さ れ た.Co〃ins14Eは,theCollinsWordWebの 一 部 で あ るtheBankof EnglishTMの デ ー タ に 基 づ く.Co〃insAEと,そ の1年 前 の2006年 に 出 版 さ れ た CollinsCOBUILDAdvancedLearner'sEnglishDictionary(第5版)を 比 較 し て , ま ず そ の 違 い に 気 づ く の は,CollinsAEに お け る コ ラ ム の 充 実 ぶ りで あ る .6つ の タ イ プ の コ ラ ムPictureI)ictionary,WordWeb,WordLink,WordPartnership,

Thesaurus,Usageが あ り,こ れ ら は 学 習 者 の 語 彙 習 得 ,流 暢 さ,コ ミュニ ケ ー シ ョ ン の 正 確 さ を 高 め る こ と を 目 的 と し て い る .Usageの コ ラ ム で は,語 の 意 味 ニ ュ ア ン ス の 違 い,文 法,文 化 な ど に 関 す る 注 記 が な さ れ て い る .

本 稿 で は,特 に,Lん4D初 版 のUSAGENQTEと 第2版 のUSAGEと

GRAMMARの コ ラ ム に 注 目 し,現 代 ア メ リ カ 英 語 の 語 法 ・文 法 上 の 変 化 や 諸 相 を 探 っ て み よ う.ま たLARDと 同 年 に 出 版 さ れ た ア メ リ カ英 語 辞 典CollinsAEの 主 に Usageに 関 す る コ ラ ム や ・LongmanDictionaryofContemporaryEnglish , CambridgeGrammarofEnglish,CollinsCOBUILDEnglishUsage2 ,Garner's ModernAmericanUsage,PrαC1'Cα 伍 ηψ 曲 σ3α8ε3の 記 述 と比 較 し て み よ う .

本 稿 で は 以 下,こ れ ら の 辞 典,語 法 書 はLDOCE4,CGE,CCEU2,GMAU , PEU3と 表 記 す る.コ ラ ム の 項 目 名 は,第2版 に お い て そ の コ ラ ム の あ る 見 出 し語 に 一 致 さ せ る.〈 〉 内 の 記 述 及 び,下 線 は 筆 者 に よ る も の で あ る .辞 典,語 法 書 の 引 用 は 項 目 に よ っ て は 抜 粋 の み で あ る も の も あ る.

2LAADの 初版 と第2版 の 両方 にあ る項 目の うち,記 述 に変 化 が あ る もの につ いて い くつ か検 討 してみ よう,2.1と2.2のUSAGEとGRAMMARの 分 類 は第2版 の分 類 に し た が う.

2.1USAGEに つ い て の も の:

2.3こ の ように,第2版 改 訂 で,コ ラムUSAGE ,GRAMMARの 記 述 は,言 葉 の 変 化 を反 映 すべ く変 更 され た り,容 認 性 をめ ぐって 見解 が 分 か れ るもの や,く だ け た用法 に関す る もの の中 には削 除 され た もの もあ る と言えよう.

3次 にLARD'とLARD2で 記述 に変化 はない が,他 の辞 典 や 語 法 書 との 問 で記 述 の 異 なる もの につ い て,こ こで はthere夏 を取 り上 げ てみ よう.

短 縮 形there'sを 複 数 形 の 名 詞 の 前 に 用 い る 用 法 に つ い て,LARD両 版 に は,「 くだ け た 話 し 言 葉 で は,多 くの 人 がthere'sを 複 数 形 の 名 詞 の 前 に 用 い る 」 とあ る.

4.2第2版 で 削 除 さ れ た 記 述 も あ る .例 え ばmarryで は 初 版 に あ っ た"Youmarry someoneorget/aremarriedtosomeone ,notwiththem.Butyoucanbemarried

withfourchildren."の 記 述 は 削 除 さ れ た .Marryと 共 に 用 い ら れ る 前 置 詞 に つ い て は 日本 の 英 語 教 育 で も繰 り返 し指 導 さ れ る 事 項 で あ る .こ れ は 「… と結 婚 す る 」の よ う に 日 本 語 の 「… と」 に つ ら れ て 砂 で は な くwithを 用 い て し ま う 学 習 者 が 多 い こ と も 理 由 で あ ろ う.こ の 部 分 は 第2版 で も残 さ れ て い れ ば ,日 本 人 英 語 学 習 者 に は 役 に 立 っ た で あ ろ う.
