A

Survey

of

the

Kammavaca-

Manuscripts

in

Pali

Kept

in

French

Public

Collections

Jacqueline

Filliozat

The

jhanzmavdcdi,

literally

"words of acts" are ritualrecitalscontaining

Pali

fbrmulas

used

by

the

Buddhist

monks of the

Theravada

schools at

various ceremonies and

disciplinary

proceedings

concerning monks and

theircommunity.

Since

the end of the

18th

century most of the

great

Oriental

libraries

in

Europe

have

collected splendid

richly

decorated

Pali

Kbmmava-ca

manuscripts

from

Burma

in

their

so-called cabinets of curiosities: they are

made ofvarious materials such as the classical

palm

leaves(i),

brass,

copper,

stiffkned cloth(2),and even

ivory

for

the

best

ones,

inscribed

with

lac

on

precious

plates

lacquered,

gilded

or silvered, sometimes

inlaid

with

mother-ofpearl,

protected

with wooden

lacquered

decorated

covers or

finely

carved.

Complete

manuscripts are rare, they range

from

11

up

to

18

fblios

depending

on the size of the

plates,

the amount of

lines,

from

3

to

7,

and the

length

of chapters considered.

They

have

been

generally

dismembered

during

auctions sales to

please

a

larger

number of amateurs who

ignore

themeaning of the texts, using them as artefacts, they are not aware ofthe sacred canonical words content.

The

British

Islesand the

German

collections are

keeping

the

greater

number of valuable copies

in

Europe.

The

large

collections

kept

in

Burma

and

Thailand

monasteries, museums and

libraries

scholars are welcomed and encouraged to study

in

the

Thai

Mon

museum

of the

Paramayikavat,

Kokret,

Pakret

in

Nonthaburi

near

Bangkok

and

in

the

Vat

Muang

Folk

Museum

organised

by

Silpakorn

University,

Bangkok,

which

is

keeping

themost

beautifu1

copy

known

tome(4).

The

various

texts

of

Kammavaca

are supposed well

known

since

a

long

time

in

Eurepe

through a

large

amount of editions, translations

and studies(5),

in

fact,

when cataloging the

French

collections of

Pali

Kammavdicdi,

I

had

difficulties

to

identify

some of them

in

order to

give

a concordance to

printed

editions.

The

order of chapters

is

not

invariably

fixed,

even

in

the manuscripts copied at the same

period

in

the same

region attesting the same writing style and

decoration.

Variant

readings

according to

different

recensions are so many

that

I

eannot

find

exact

words concordance

between

manuscripts and editions,

Europeans

as well

Burmese,

Singhalese,

Siamese

or

Khmer.

A

meticulous study of every

manuscript

in

particular

could

help

to

begin

a satisfactory classification of

the

Kbmmavdica

as they really stand, taking

into

account allvariant readings

existing and start critical editions

for

each traditionaccording to

the

epoch of

the

copy

in

its

proper

geographical

area.

Colophens

in

vernacular

languages,

woven ribbons

(saz)lgyo)

fastening

the

plates(6)

should

be

deciphered

showing names of scribes,

donors,

monasteries, cities,

villages-when reported-.

They

have

to

be

noted

in

index

and compared with the

lists

already

published

in

the excellent catalogues

fbr

German

or

Danmark

collections(7).

For

catalogers of manuscripts

the

habit

is

to

refer

to

the

various

formulas

in

counting them

into

theorder

generally

used

in

European

editions established once

fbr

ever.

Because

most manuscripts open with

the

Cipasampado,

this

formula

takes

number

1,

but

it

is

nota standard norm,

it

just

indicates

thatthesemanuscripts

have

been

copied

for

the special use of

a monk ordination.

Let

us now explore collections ofKbmmavacj

kept

in

France.

More

thatone

hundred

original manuscripts of ]dammava'cd copied

in

(3)

5

among

the

1349

manuscripts

housed

in

the

French

museums and

libraries

public

collections.

They

have

been

recently systematically catalogued

but

neither

yet

studied nor critically edited, except one

by

Eugene

Bumouf

in

1826

with the

help

of thescholars

Charles

Lassen

and

Frangois

Bopp(8).

Below

is

Laplacian on circle packing fractals invariant with respect to certain Kleinian groups (i.e., discrete groups of M¨ obius transformations on the Riemann sphere C b = C ∪ {∞}),

She reviews the status of a number of interrelated problems on diameters of graphs, including: (i) degree/diameter problem, (ii) order/degree problem, (iii) given n, D, D 0 ,

This section describes results concerning graphs relatively close to minimum K p -saturated graphs, such as the saturation number of K p with restrictions on the minimum or

In Section 7 two-sided estimates of the mixed moduli of smoothness in terms of the Fourier coefficients are given. It is well known that these results are closely connected to

This is a survey of the known properties of Iwasawa algebras, i.e., completed group rings of compact p-adic analytic groups with coefficients the ring Z p of p-adic integers or

We shall always assume that the commutative algebra A is finitely generated over the ring k, with rational action of a Chevalley group scheme G. Further, M will be a noetherian

We then con- sider CM abelian extensions of totally real fields and by combining our earlier considerations with the known validity of the Main Con- jecture of Iwasawa theory we

We present sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions to Neu- mann and periodic boundary-value problems for some class of quasilinear ordinary differential equations.. We
