The
jhanzmavdcdi,literally
"words of acts" are ritualrecitalscontainingPali
fbrmulas
usedby
theBuddhist
monks of theTheravada
schools atvarious ceremonies and
disciplinary
proceedings
concerning monks andtheircommunity.
Since
the end of the18th
century most of thegreat
Oriental
libraries
in
Europe
have
collected splendidrichly
decorated
Pali
Kbmmava-ca
manuscripts
from
Burma
in
their
so-called cabinets of curiosities: they aremade ofvarious materials such as the classical
palm
leaves(i),
brass,
copper,stiffkned cloth(2),and even
ivory
for
the
best
ones,inscribed
withlac
onprecious
plates
lacquered,
gilded
or silvered, sometimesinlaid
withmother-ofpearl,
protected
with woodenlacquered
decorated
covers orfinely
carved.
Complete
manuscripts are rare, they rangefrom
11
upto
18
fblios
depending
on the size of theplates,
the amount oflines,
from
3
to7,
and thelength
of chapters considered.They
have
been
generally
dismembered
during
auctions sales toplease
alarger
number of amateurs whoignore
themeaning of the texts, using them as artefacts, they are not aware ofthe sacred canonical words content.
The
British
Islesand theGerman
collections arekeeping
the
greater
number of valuable copies
in
Europe.

The
varioustexts
ofKammavaca
are supposed wellknown
sincea
long
timein
Eurepe
through alarge
amount of editions, translationsand studies(5),
in
fact,
when cataloging theFrench
collections ofPali
Kammavdicdi,
I
had
difficulties
toidentify
some of themin
order togive
a concordance to
printed
editions.The
order of chaptersis
notinvariably
fixed,
evenin
the manuscripts copied at the sameperiod
in
the sameregion attesting the same writing style and
decoration.
Variant
readingsaccording to
different
recensions are so manythat
I
eannotfind
exactwords concordance
between
manuscripts and editions,Europeans
as wellBurmese,
Singhalese,
Siamese
orKhmer.
A
meticulous study of everymanuscript
in
particular
couldhelp
to
begin
a satisfactory classification ofthe
Kbmmavdica
as they really stand, takinginto
account allvariant readingsexisting and start critical editions
for
each traditionaccording tothe
epoch ofthe
copyin
its
proper
geographical
area.Colophens
in
vernacularlanguages,
woven ribbons(saz)lgyo)
fastening
theplates(6)
shouldbe
deciphered
showing names of scribes,donors,
monasteries, cities,villages-when reported-.
They
have
tobe
notedin
index
and compared with thelists
alreadypublished
in
the excellent cataloguesfbr

collections(7).For
catalogers of manuscriptsthe
habit
is
to
referto
the
various
formulas
in
counting theminto
theordergenerally
usedin
European
editions established oncefbr
ever.Because
most manuscripts open withthe
Cipasampado,
thisformula
takes
number1,
but
it
is
nota standard norm,it
just
indicates
thatthesemanuscriptshave
been
copiedfor
the special use ofa monk ordination.
Let
us now explore collections ofKbmmavacjkept
