Abstract

The Association of American Geographers (AAG) 95th _{Annual Meeting was held March 23'"~ 27}th _{in Honolulu,} Hawaii, U. S. A. It was the first for the AAG in their nearly I 00 years of history to hold an annual meeting outside the continental United States. More than 3100 geographers from 38 countries participated. It was one of the largest meetings ever held, and the variety of the participants'national background made this Hawaii meeting truly international. While the papers presented covered a wide range of areas and topics, there were l\vo central foci: I) Living Hawaii Geographies, and 2) Geography at the Dawn of the 2 I" Century.

The New Zealand Studies Society-Japan Wellington Conference was held at the University of Victoria of Wellington, in the capital city of Wellington, New Zealand. It was also the first for the Society to hold an overseas meeting since its establishment in 1993. The participants were represented in equal proportion from Japan and New Zealand. As an area studies group, the papers represented from such fields as Geography, Japanese Language Education, Comparative Literature, Folklore, Comparative Journalism, Law and Tourism .
