Institute of Gerontology, The University of Tokyo (IOG) is a cross-departmental organization that the
University established under the Office of the President’s Committee for Presidential Initiatives in
April 2009 to serve as a hub for conducting integrated, interdisciplinary research. By assembling the
collective abilities of University-affiliated faculty members and students, IOG aims to help tackle the
many complications characterizing the aging societies taking shape at accelerating rates both in Japan
and around the world. IOG grew out of the Gerontology Research Division, which was originally created
through private-sector donations in April 2006.
What makes IOG unique is that it goes beyond basic research on the various problems in aging
societies—the organization also focuses on conceptualizing and bringing vibrant, dynamic energy
into aging societies by engaging in social experimental research projects through interdisciplinary,
cross-field teams, formulating promising policy proposals rooted in evidence and real social needs,
and constructing models for ideal social systems. That diverse mix of activities naturally nurtures
collaborative relationships with researchers from universities and institutions around the globe,
government agencies, private-sector companies, and health care-related institutions, and specialists
and individual residents taking action in their respective regional communities. The work that goes on
at IOG, then, is research activities conducted with them as well as social contribution activities.
IOG is also active on the educational front, having opened its very own gerontology-related course in
2009. In 2013, as a core component of “Graduate Program in Gerontology : Global Leadership Initiative
for an Age-Friendly Society (GLAFS)”, an educational leadership program covering 9 graduate schools
and 30 departments at the University of Tokyo, IOG launched an interdisciplinary graduate program to
delve deep into integrated research on aging societies.

Joining forces with local governments of Kashiwa City (Chiba Prefecture), Fukui Prefecture, Kawasaki City, Kamakura City,
Chigasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and other areas, IOG conducts a wide variety of field-based research and hands-on
projects like “Community Development for a Super-Aging Society”, “Senior Citizen’s New Career Model in the Community”
and “Integrated Community Care Systems based on Multi-Professional Teamwork”. The Institute is also working on efforts
to lay the groundwork for rebuilding communities and starting community activities in Kamaishi City and Otsuchi Town
(Iwate Prefecture), two areas ravaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.
In 2011, IOG formed The University of Tokyo Network “Gerontology” -an industry-academia collaboration that brings
researchers together with players in automobiles, communications, food, and other industries in hopes of creating an
information-sharing, innovation-driving foundation for solutions to the many problems that aging societies face.

Every March, IOG holds an open symposium where presenters discuss their research for the past year. By also sponsoring
seminars with guest experts from overseas, organizing lectures and media appearances across the country, and
publishing, IOG is working to bring aging society-associated problems into the public eye and propose viable solutions.
The Institute also accepts delegations of observers from other countries and engages in other forms of international
exchange.

Aiming to give students an interdisciplinary command of the problems affecting the elderly and aging societies, IOG
created Japan’s first-ever cross-departmental educational program on gerontology in April 2008 (for graduate students
and third- and fourth-year undergraduate students). Another new IOG offering took shape in April 2014 with the creation
of “Graduate Program in Gerontology:Global Leadership Initiative for an Age-Friendly Society (GLAFS)”, the program that
brings IOG together with 9 graduate schools and 30 departments at the University. GLAFS aims to train highly specialized
experts capable of spearheading crosscutting efforts to untangle the complex issues facing super-aging societies.
