Abstract

Based on Tamaki Uemura’s Understanding of Conversion:

Her Involvement in Hakucho Masamune’s Return to Faith MATSUMOTO Nozomi

This paper explores the ideological significance of the missionary work

undertaken by the 20

th

century Protestant missionary, Tamaki Uemura (1890 ̶

1992). It pays particular attention on her role in leading Hakucho Masamune

(1879 ̶ 1962) back to Christianity late in his life. In doing so, the paper reveals

that Tamaki’s work was effective not just because she was the daughter of

Masahisa Uemura, the person who had led Hakucho to baptism in the first

place, but also in her ability to lead him back to the Christian faith through the

comprehensive understanding of the doubts pertaining to the ideological conflict

between Christianity and impermanence that had caused Hakucho to disregard

the religion.
