(1)Vol. 48. No. 6. IPSJ Journal. June 2007. Foreword. Special Issue: Selected Papers from ICMU 2006 Susumu Ishihara† Today we are receiving great benefit of mobile computing and ubiquitous networking. Wide variety of wireless network technologies including WiFi, ZigBee, Bluetooth, 3.5 G cellular networks, etc. are used widely in our society and various next generation technologies are expected to be launched. Hence we are already experiencing the benefits of anytime and anywhere computing. However, there is still room for research and development in this area in order to fully realize the vision of ubiquitous society. The International Conference on Mobile Computing and Ubiquitous Networking (ICMU) provides researchers and practitioners in this area with a forum for discussion and collaboration sponsored by IPSJ SIG-MBL (Special Interest Group of Mobile Computing and Ubiquitous Networking). The third ICMU was technically co-sponsored by British Computer Society (BCS), The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society, Technical Committee on Mobile Communication and Applications. The third ICMU was successfully held at British Computer Society London Office, London, U.K. on October 11 through 13, 2006. We received 69 paper submissions from authors spread over 14 countries in the world. Each paper was read by two or three reviewers. After the review process and online discussions, we selected 25 outstanding papers for oral presentations and 15 papers for poster presentations. The TPC made a plan of this special issue and forms the Guest Editorial Committee. Out of the top 25 papers, we finally selected six papers based on the conference review results. The resubmitted journal papers were carefully. reviewed again by different reviewers under regular IPSJ review process. The half of the accepted papers covers different topics on ad hoc networks. They focus on location-based services, heterogeneous wireless networks including 3 G cellar networks Cooperating with hoc networks, and directional antenna. The topics of rest three papers are sensor network devices, mobile object management, and mobile agent based privacy protection. As stated above, the accepted papers cover various kinds of important issues for mobile computing and ubiquitous networking. We believe this special issue will significantly benefit our future research. We are now planning ICMU 2008 (http:// www.icmu.org/) which will be held in Tokyo, Japan. We also believe that this issue encourages authors to submit quality papers to ICMU 2008 conference. The members of the Guest Editorial Committee are: Masahiro Ishiyama (Toshiba Corporation) Eiji Kamioka (Shibaura Institute of Technology) Tadanori Mizuno (Shizuoka University) Ken Ohta (NTT DoCoMo) Naonobu Okazaki (Miyazaki University) Ryoji Ono (Mitsubishi Electric Corporation) Osamu Takahashi (Future UniversityHakodate) Takashi Watanabe (Shizuoka University) Hirozumi Yamaguchi (Osaka University) Miki Yamamoto (Kansai University) Hidetoshi Yokota (KDDI R&D Laboratories). † Shizuoka University 2033.
