17世 紀 の商用 英語通信 文 の特徴

は じめ に

遠 距 離 通 信 の 主 役 と し て,英 文 レ タ ー は 徐 々 に,確 実 に,英 国 国 民 に 浸 透 し,17世 紀 に な っ て も そ の 勢 い は 衰 え る こ と は な か っ た 。 当 時 既 に,商 人 の 海 外 進 出 に伴 う 関 係 者 間 の 緊 密 な コ ミュ ニ ケ ー シ ョ ンが 求 め られ て お り,レ タ ー の 書 き方 を 学 び た い とい う人 の ニ ー ズ は これ まで 以 上 に 強 くな っ て い た 。 そ れ を 裏 づ け る か の よ う に,前 世 紀 に 非 常 に 人 気 の 高 か っ た マ ニ ュ ア ル の 三 大 ベ ス トセ ラ ー(TheEnimieofldlenesse,TheEnglishSecretary,TheMerchantsAvizo)は,17

世 紀 の 半 ば 頃 まで 版 を 重 ね て い た 。

ま た,そ れ ら に対 抗 す べ き新 しい マ ニ ュ ア ル が17世 紀 に も続 々発 行 さ れ た 。 初 期 に は,そ れ ま で の 「教 え 」 を 主 に して い た マ ニ ュ ア ル に対 抗 して,面 白 さや 遊 び の 要 素 を加 味 した 楽 し い 読 み 物,「 レ ター 文 例 集 」 が 数 多 く出 版 され て い る。

17世 紀 中 期 以 降 に な る と,こ れ ま で の 教 え(楽 しみ)に 加 え て,比 較 的 新 し い 考 え 方 を主 張 し た 内 容 の も の が 発 行 され て い る 。 事 実,著 者 た ち は 自著 の 良 さ を 強 調 す る あ ま り,今 ま で の マ ニ ュ ア ル に 過 度 な まで に ラ イバ ル心 を む き 出 し に 非 難 ・批 判 して い る 。 確 か に 内 容 的 に は,こ れ まで の 書 く こ とだ け で は な く話 す こ と も含 め た,い わ ゆ る コ ミュ ニ ケ ー シ ョ ン上 達 の た め の 「実 用 書 」 を 目指 して い た よ う で あ る 。

本 稿 で は,17世 紀 の 下 記 マ ニ ュ ア ル 上 で の 教 え や レ タ ー の 特 徴 な ら び に 当 時 の 状 況 を 明 ら か に し た い(1)。

1.通 信 文(レ タ ー)に つ い て

前 世 紀 に 引 き続 き,17世 紀 に な っ て も レ タ ー の役 割 は依 然 重 要 で あ っ た 。 例 え ば,

「王 は,ど の よ う に して 自分 の 偉 大 な 行 動 を知 ら しめ た り,自 分 の領 土 を拡 大 した り,国 民 の傷 を 癒 す こ と が で き る の か 。 貴 族 は,ど の よ う に して 自 国 に奉 仕 す る た め の情 報 を 入 手 で き る の か 。 商 人 は,ど の よ う に し て多 くの 国 で 得 た 富 を 自国 に 持 ち 帰 る こ と が で き る の か 。 遠 隔 地 の 人 々 は,ど の よ うに して お 互 い に 話 し を す る こ とが で き る の か 。 こ れ ら は,レ ター の 助 け に よ っ て 初 め て 可 能 に な る の で は な か ろ うか 」(n序 文)

と,レ タ ー の効 用 が 強 調 さ れ て い る 。 ま た,17世 紀 後 半 に な っ て も,

「あ ら ゆ る 時 代 に お い て,書 く技 術 は,人 類 に と っ て 共 通 の 恩 恵 以 上 の もの で,… こ の(書 く)技 術 は,我 々 の 住 ん で い る 世 界 で の 重 要 な こ と を 交 渉 した り,処 理 す る 時 に,そ の 便 利 さ が わ か る。 特 に 文 明 国 で は,人 間社 会 の 利 益 や 楽 しみ,幸 福 を もた らす 売 買,貿 易,通 商 が 行 わ れ る 場 合 や 遠 距 離 の 人 と の 話 し合 い が 必 要 な 場 合 に 役 立 つ 」

と,状 況 に 応 じて 書 け る技 術 の 習 得 の 大 切 さが 強 調 さ れ て い る 。 恐 ら く当 時 も前 世 紀 と 同様,書 くこ と は 専 門 の 秘 書 に任 さ れ て い た と思 わ れ る 。 また,秘 書 に 限 らず,種 々 の 専 門 家 が 求 め ら れ て い た よ う で あ る 。 しか し,そ の 実 態 は は な は だ 心 も と な く,

「近 頃,一 ・介 の 行 商 人 で も 商 人 と呼 ば れ た り,屍 理 屈 を言 う人 が 弁 護 士 と思 わ れ た り,単 な る 流 行 作 家 が 詩 人 とみ な さ れ る 。 … レ タ ー を ほ とん ど書 け な い 人 で も秘 書 とみ な さ れ る 」(H一 序文)

と,皮 肉 られ る ほ ど多 くの 専 門 家 が 現 れ た が,社 会 の ニ ー ズ を満 た す べ く真 の 専 門 家 は依 然 少 な か っ た よ う で あ る 。

こ の よ う に,依 然 と し て 書 くこ と の 難 し さ が 強 調 さ れ て い た 時 代 お い て, す る 教 え は,ど の よ う に指 示 さ れ て い る の で あ ろ う か 。

レ ター の 書 き方 に 関

2.通 信 文(レ タ ー)の 書 き 方 に つ い て (1)望 ま しい 書 き 方

17世 紀 の商用 英語通信 文の特徴3 レ タ ー の 書 き方 に 関 して,特 に 目新 し くは な い が,前 世 紀 よ り具 体 的 で わ か りや す い 。 例 え ば,

「私 は,あ な た 方 読 者 に 親 し み の あ る 書 き方 を 勧 め る。 難 し い 言 葉 も 美 辞 麗 句 も い ら な い 。 ま た,あ な た が な るべ く大 衆 の 言 葉 で 書 き た い と思 う な らば,ラ テ ン語 の 金 言 を 引 用 して は な ら な い 。 … レ タ ー は 主 に,親 しい 友 人 に 宛 て られ,家 庭 内 の 問 題 な どが 取 り上 げ られ る の で,硬 い 表 現 や 学 究 的 な 書 き方 は 望 ま し くな い 。 ラ テ ン語 の 使 用 は控 え 目 に す べ き で,ラ テ ン語 の モ ッ トー や こ と わ ざ な ど,読 み 手 の 内 容 理 解 の 助 け と な る 場 合 に 限 り採 用 す べ きで あ る。 … 自 国 語 で は な く外 国 語 を多 用 す る こ と は,相 手 に 気 取 り過 ぎて い る と思 わ れ る恐 れ が あ る。 あ な た の レ タ ー で の 説 明 は 明 確 に しな さ い 。 そ して,相 手 を不 快 に させ な い よ う に 心 が け な さい 。 レ タ ー で 用 い ら れ る語 句 は,言 葉 の 意 味 の 正 確 さ を期 す た め に,あ ま り古 い 表 現 は 引 用 す べ きで は な い 。 新 しい 表 現 も過 度 に使 用 して は な ら な い 」(N‐"AdviceforwritingLetters")

な ど,「 親 しみ 」 を 強 調 し て い る。 そ の た め,古 い 表 現=ラ テ ン語,新 し い 表 現=外 国 語 も な る べ く使 わ な い 方 が 望 ま しい と さ れ て い る 。

レ タ ー に は,

① 通 常 の 話 し方 と 同 じ 自然 さが 望 ま しい 。

② 修 辞 学 上 の 比 喩 な ど は 不 適 で あ る 。

③(た だ し)読 者 に 読 み た い と思 わ せ る よ う な洗 練 され た 表 現 は 必 要 で あ る 。

な ど(V‑"lnstructionsforWritingofLetters,TheFirstpalt"),難 しい 表 現 や 語 句 を避 け,礼 儀 を 失 し な い 親 しい 書 き方 が 必 要 と な る 。 従 っ て,発 信 者 は,レ タ ー を書 く時 に,

「何 が 一 番 適 した 話 題 な の か,時 間 や 状 況 を よ く考 え な け れ ば な ら な い 。 ま た,相 手 に よ っ て 書 き方 を 変 え る こ と も必 要 で あ る」(V‑"TheSecondPart")

と い う こ と を 念 頭 に 置 き,実 際 に は,

と,16世 紀 の マ ニ ュ ア ル で 指 摘 さ れ た 教 え と 同 じ受 信 者 と の 関 係 を重 視 した 書 き方 を 主 張 し て い る 。 さ ら に,

(2)上 下 関 係(階 級)を 意 識 し た書 き方

17世 紀 も前 世 紀 と 同様 に,相 手 を敬 う こ と が 求 め られ て い る。

1)間 隔(ス ペ ー ス)の 活 用

レ タ ー 用 紙1,2枚 と い う 短 い 文 書 上 で,い か に 相 手 を 奉 り,敬 う か と い う こ と に,当 時 の 人 々 は腐 心 して い た よ うで あ る。 こ こ で は,非 常 に 簡 単 で 誰 に で も可 能 な方 法,間 隔(ス ペ ー ス)の 活 用 が 指 摘 さ れ て い る 。 発 信 者 は,レ タ ー 用 紙 の 間 隔(ス ペ ー ス)を 活 用 す る こ と に よ り,簡 単 に 相 手 へ の 尊 敬 の 気 持 ち を示 す こ とが で きる 。 言 い 換 え る と,受 信 者 が レ タ ー を 開 封 し 一 見 した だ け で わ か る方 法 で あ る 。

例 え ば,宛 名 の 肩 書 き につ い て,
