FOREWORD

Special Section on Challenged Networking Technologies and Its Service Quality

To expand reachable areas of the Internet, challenged networking technologies are assuming a signifi- cant role. In challenged networking technologies, various attractive and feasible approaches have been proposed so far. Recently, many studies have been trying to adapt them to real environments, such as disaster area and car environments. Because the challenged networking technologies have different fea- tures from current end-to-end communications, they will be required to integrate with existing networking technologies and to bring novel applications and services. In order to achieve them, it is important to sup- port various research activities of challenged networking technologies such as their applications, services, communication protocols, security, simulation tools and analysis, testbed. The Technical Committee on Communication Quality (CQ) of the IEICE has organized the “Special Section on Challenged Networking Technologies and Its Service Quality”, with the purpose of accelerating research activities on this field.

In response to this special section, advanced and attractive 14 papers were submitted. The editorial com- mittee selected seven papers including two invited papers through very careful and fair review process.

The selected papers cover the interesting technological areas of Delay/Disruption Tolerant Network and Mobile Ad-Hoc Network.

On behalf of the editorial committee, we would like to sincerely thank all of the authors, the reviewers, and the IEICE publishing office who supported this special section. Also, we hope that these sophisticated papers will greatly contribute to the development of challenged networking technologies field. Thank you very much, again.
