Special Section on Information and Communication

Technolo-gies for Next-generation Mobile Multimedia Life

The recent growth of 3.5–3.9 G cellular networks, mobile WiMAXs, and wireless LANs have enabled us to use high-end mobile multimedia services like high-speed mobile Internet, mobile IPTV and so forth. In order to support such emerging mobile multimedia services, advanced technologies in mobile terminal design, network architecture and application software are necessary. Considering the advent of ultrahigh-speed mobile networks such as LTE-Advanced, the convergence of mobile communication and information technologies is one of the most significant concepts which enrich the next-generation mobile multimedia life.

Considering the aforementioned current trend into account, the Technical Committee on Mobile Multi-media Communications (MoMuC) of the IEICE has organized the “Special Section on Information and Communication Technologies for Next-generation Mobile Multimedia Life”, with the purpose of acceler-ating research activities on advanced mobile multimedia communications.

In response to this special section, 24 papers and 9 letters were submitted. The editorial committee selected 7 papers including 1 invited paper and 3 letters through the careful and fair review process. The selected papers cover the technological areas of PAN, Femto cell, location detection, power saving control, ad-hoc network and so on.

The editorial committee hopes that these high-level papers will contribute to mobile multimedia commu-nication technologies and market progress. As the guest editor-in-chief, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all the authors for their contributions and to all the editorial committee members for their hard work in the review process.

Eiji Kamioka

,Guest Editor-in-Chief

Eiji Kamioka (Member) is an associate professor at Shibaura Institute of Technology. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from Aoyama Gakuin University in 1989, 1991 and 1997, respectively. After receiving his M.S. degree, he joined SHARP Cor-poration, Communications Laboratory, working on R&D multimedia communications system. He later enrolled in the doctoral course of graduate school in 1994. After he finished his Ph.D., he worked at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) as a JSPS Research Fel-low from 1997 to 1998, the National Center for Science Information Systems (NACSIS) and the National Institute of Informatics (NII) as an assistant professor from 1998 to 2006. He served as the publication chair of 7th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Data Manage-ment (MDM2006) and as a technical program co-chair of 3rd IPSJ International Conference on Mobile Computing and Ubiquitous Networking (ICMU2006). At present, he is the chair of the Technical Committee on Mobile Multimedia Communications of the IEICE. His

cur-rent research interests encompass mobile multimedia communications, ubiquitous and context-aware computing, and ambient intelligence. He is a member of IEEE, IPSJ, JPS and JSEE.
