OUTLINE OF SUBJECT N:

TRADITIONAL SOCIAL SYSTEMS AND THEIR TRANSFORMATION

Yasuyuki KARAKITA (Team Leader)

It is important for social and behavioral scientists to understand the diversity of socioeco

nomic development in Oceania. The members of Team IV carried out an interdisciplinary study

involving cultural anthropologist, a human geographer, a psychologist, an enconomist, and a legal scientist. The members of the project team studied the transformation of social systems at

different levels of society such as the state, provinces, ethnic groups and individuals. The spe

policy in Papua New Guinea.

Among the members of Team IV, Y. Tajima and T. Hirakawa visited villages and urban

settlements in Lae and Port Moresby. They conducted several interviews with local leaders, students, and government officers. Y. Matsuda and N. Tabira visited university departments and government offices relevant to fisheries in Lae, Port Moresby and Rabaul. They inter viewed researchers and officers specialized in marine policies and fishery rights. Y. KARAKITA and M. Ishii visited researchers in Lae and Port Moresby and collected relevant documents. Although it was impossible to conduct an anthropological field work within the format of Team

K they had short excursions, determining the feasibility of intensive studies.

It is hoped that the preliminary project results of Team IV will be developed into a holistic
