Introduction

K.Weierstrass は熱伝導方程式の解を考察中に有名な多項式近似定理を発見した と言われる。 また S. N.Bernstein は確率論の手法を用いて、Weierstrass の多項式近 似定理の直接証明を与えている。 これらの結果は作用素論の立場から統–的に述べ ることができる。

先ず、$\mathrm{C}^{\mathrm{b}}(\mathrm{R})$ を $\mathrm{R}$ 上の有界な連続関数のつくる Banach

空間とし、 任意の関数$\mathrm{f}$

$\in \mathrm{C}^{\mathrm{b}}(\mathrm{R})$ に対して

と置くと、 $\{\mathrm{W}_{\mathrm{t}}\}_{\mathrm{t}>_{0}}$ は $\mathrm{C}^{\mathrm{b}}(\mathrm{R})$

からそれ自身への $||\mathrm{W}_{\mathrm{t}}||=1(\forall\iota>0)$なる有界線形作用

素のネットであり、Weierstrass の多項式近似定理の本質は

$\lim_{\wedge}.||\mathrm{w}_{\downarrow(\mathrm{r})-\mathrm{f}|}|_{\mathrm{K}^{=}}0$($\forall \mathrm{f}\in \mathrm{C}^{\mathrm{b}}(\mathrm{R}),$ $\forall \mathrm{K}$: compact) が成り立つことを主張する。ただし $||\mathrm{f}||_{\mathrm{K}^{=\mathrm{S}}}\mathrm{u}\mathrm{R}|\mathrm{f}\mathrm{x}\in(\mathrm{X})|$ である。

$\mathrm{w}_{\mathrm{t}}$ を Weierstrass作

用素と呼ぶ。 また任意の関数$\mathrm{f}\in \mathrm{C}([0,1])$ に対して、

と置くと、 $\{\mathrm{B}_{\mathrm{n}} :\mathrm{n}=1,2, \ldots\}$ はノルム空間$\mathrm{C}([0,1])$ からそれ自身への有界線形作用

素の列であり、Bernstein の近似定理は

が成り立つことを主張する。ただしY $|| \mathrm{f}||_{\infty\infty}=\max 0\leq \mathrm{x}\leq 1|\mathrm{f}(\mathrm{x})|$ である。

$\mathrm{B}_{\mathrm{n}}$をBernstein

作用素と呼ぶ。

これらの概念をまとめて見よう。 実または複素線形ノルム空間X と、 X上のセミ

ノルム系 $\{||||_{\mathrm{p}}\}$があるとき、X からそれ自身への有界な線形作用素のネット $\{\mathrm{T}_{\lambda}\}$が

を満たすとき、 $\{\mathrm{T}_{\lambda}\}$ を X上の $\{||||_{\mathrm{p}}\}$に関する線形近似法と言う。 もしセミノルム

系がもともとのX のノルムだけから成る場合は、 単にノルム空間 X 上の線形近似

法と省略する。 従って、$\{\mathrm{W}_{\mathrm{t}}\}_{\iota>0}$ は$\mathrm{C}^{\mathrm{b}}(\mathrm{R})$

上のセミノルム系

に関する線形近似法であり、 $\{\mathrm{B}_{\mathrm{n}} :\mathrm{n}=1,2,\ldots\}$ は $\mathrm{C}([0,11)$ 上の ($||||_{\infty}$ に関する) 線形近似法である。 そこで与えられた線形作用素のネットがいつ線形近似法となるかと言う疑問が湧 いて来るのは自然であろう。 H.Bohman[3] は Bernstein 作用素を含むようなもっと 一般の補間作用素の列に対して、 それが線形近似法となる条件を発見した。 その条 件とはたった 3 個のありふれた関数 $\{1, *x^{2}\}$ が線形近似されるだけで十分と言う ものであった。 これはP. Korovkin [7] に引き継がれ、彼によって任意の正線形作用 素列でも正しいことが示された。更に D. Wulbert[161によって、正性がある種の ノルム条件で置き変えられることが示された。 日本でも M. Makamura によっては じめて Korovkin の定理が紹介され、 いくつかの関数解析的解釈が試みられている (cf. [4,10, 11] 。 所で線形近似法の本質は関数近似であるが、 しかしこれは見方を変えれば恒等作 用素の強収束と見ることができる。 このような観点に立てば、Korovkin型近似定理 は Banach 空間上の有界線形作用素の研究に–つの示唆を与えるのではないかと思 う。 実際具体的な関数空間上でこのような考えが1970年代に起こった。それは H. Bauer[21,C. Micchelli[91等に始まるのではないかと思われる。 [良い定理はそれ自体定義となり得る』 を信念として、 次のような定義を考えて見よう。 Banach 空間 $X$と$X$の部分集合$S$が与えられたとき、 次のような性質を持つ $T\in B(x)$ ($=x$上の有界線形作用素の全体) を試験集合に関する $X$上の BKW-作 用素と呼ぶ

この言葉を用いると、 Korovkin 達の結果は、 $C(\mathrm{r}0,1])$ 上の恒等作用素は試験関数 族 $\{1, *x^{2}\}$ に関する BKW-作用素であると言える。 我々の研究目的の–つは具体的な$X$, $S$ に対して、$BK’W(X;s)$ を具体的に決定する ことにある。特に$X$としてコンパクト Hausdorff 空間 $\Omega$ 上の連続関数のつくる Banach環 $C(\Omega)$ を対象とすることに興味がある。 また $S$ としては有限個の関数族を 対象としたい。島 KW(X; $S$) を決定するには、 ノルム 1の BKW-作用素が分かればよ いわけで、そのためには次の補題は基本的である。

ここでは上の結果を–般の $S=\{1, x, \ldots,x^{n}\}$ について考察する (cf. [6])。また $S=\{1, x, x^{2}\}$の場合については任意の BKW-作用素を決定付け、 更に $\Omega$ が $[0,1]$ の 特殊なコンパクト部分空間の場合についても考察する。 (cf. [12])。 Korovkin型近似論の研究に関しては、最近出版されたAltomare-Campiti [1] の本が 良い教科書となろう。
