APPLICATION NOTE

IoT Development Kit (IDK) ALS Shield Bring‐up Test

Equipment Needed

Baseboard with jumpers, Windows ® PC with minimum 1 USB port, installed Java JRE/JDK v.8u101 or higher, Windows 7, 8 or 10 Operating System, mini USB cable, installed IDK IDE v3.4, ALS shield.

Procedure

1. Connect the ALS shield onto the baseboard over the PMOD UART connector. Connect a mini USB cable to the baseboard and computer (see Figure 1).

2. Testing of the ALS Shield: Open the IDK software by clicking on the IDK icon in the start menu or via the IDK icon on your desktop (see Figure 2).

3. When the IDK environment is open, left-click on Examples, Simple and choose simple example Ambient Light

(NOA1305_AL). See Figure 3.

4. The code structure of the example appears on the left, under Project Explorer, named Ambient Light

(NOA1305_ALS). A small red cross may appear close to the name of the project. This is due to indexing that has to be rebuilt. In order to remove the red cross, right click on the NOA1305_ALS, go to Index and left-click on Rebuild. It should disappear after a few seconds.

5. Double click on Ambient Light (NOA1305_ALS) and the code structure should open.

6. Double click on config.cfg. Once the file opens, you will need to rewrite the COM port number. You can find the COM port number of the baseboard inside the window’s device manager. For example, let’s assume it is COM7.

7. We have to rewrite the COM port number to the actual one that the baseboard is connected to. Change COM4 to

COM7. Close the config.cfg window and save the configuration.

8. Left-click on the project Ambient Light (NOA1305_ALS).

9. If we have the file already marked, left-click on the green ON icon and the command prompt window will open.

The time countdown should start.

10. Now you have to push the RESET button on the baseboard according to the picture below.

11. Once the RESET button is pushed, programming of the baseboard starts. After successfully programming, the cmd window will prompt you to push the RESET button again. Repeat Step 10.

12. You will see on the console the initialization and demonstration program running. Check the surrounding light intensity level after some time. Wave your hand over the ALS sensor to decrease light intensity level. Move your hand away and see how light intensity level increases. The baseboard LCD display also provides the light intensity level values.
