JohnMassinger,TheSecretaryinFashion の レ タ ー 例 文 に つ い て

稲 津 一 芳

1.序

1568年,WilliamFulwoodが 初 め て の英 文 レ タ ー マ ニ ュ ア ル で あ る TheEnemieofldlenesseを 世 に 出 して か ら,16,17世 紀 と多 くの英 文 マ ニ ュ ア ル が 発 行 さ れ た 。 そ れ ぞ れ の マ ニ ュ ア ル は,そ れ な りの 優 れ た 点 や 特 徴 を 持 って い るが,内 容 的 に は非 常 に似 通 って い た 。 通 信 文 の 書 き 方 に つ い て の"ハ ウ ツ ウ"も の と い う性 格 上,そ れ は 当 然 の こ と か も し れ な い。 さ らに,当 時 は ま だ 著 作 権 とい う概 念 は な く,他 の 類 似 の 本 か

らの 内 容 の 瓢 窃 は 別 段 不 思 議 な こ とで は な く,著 者 も罪 の 意 識 は な か っ た よ う で あ る。特 に17世 紀 半 ば に な る と,マ ニ ュ ア ル 間 の 販 売 競 争 が 激

し くな り,自 著 の 序 文 で,同 種 の 書 物 を 批 判 ・非 難 け な す 著 者 も現 れ た 。

こ の よ う な 激 しい 出 版 競 争 が 行 わ れ,そ れ ぞ れ の 著 者 の 間 で 競 争(ラ イバ ル)心 が生 ま れ た17世 紀 半 ば 以 降 に,種 々 の マ ニ ュ ア ル の 中 で 頻 繁 に 引 用 ・模 倣 さ れ る よ う に な っ た の は,JohnMassingerのTheSecre‑

tart'in、Fashion(1640)で あ っ た。 確 か に 同 書 は,① レ タ ー の2人 区 分,

② 行 間 あ る い は ス ペ ー ス に よ る 尊 敬 の 度 合 い の 示 し方,③ レ タ ー 本 文 の 3っ の 構 成(序 論 論 述,結 論)な ど従 来 の 書 物 に は見 られ な い 非 常 に 独 創 的 な説 明 を 含 ん で い た。

そ こで 本 稿 で は,17世 紀 の ベ ス トセ ラ ー の ひ とっ で,17世 紀 後 半 の マ

ニ ュ ア ル の 内 容 の 主 流 に な っ た と思 わ れ る同 書 の レ タ ー の 書 き方 に つ い て の 指 示(Instruction)と そ の 指 示 に適 した レ タ ー例 文 を紹 介 す る。 ま た,そ れ に 関 連 す る レ タ ー例 文 の 表 現 の 特 徴 を 明 らか に した い。

2.レ タ ー 例 文

2‑1.抗 議 の レタ ー(LettersofRemonstrance)

本 状 は,自 分 よ り身 分 の 低 い 者 に対 す る場 合 や,相 手 の 反 応 に気 を 使 う必 要 の な い場 合 に は,そ れ ほ ど工 夫(invention)は い らな い。相 手 の誤 り と そ の 原 因 を 指 摘 し,そ の 影 響 を 説 明 した う え で,間 違 い の 訂 正 を勧 告 す る だ け で よ い。
