A List of Delphacidae in the Ryukyu

Islands (Hemiptera)

-Introduction

Although it seems to be very important to clarify such things as the

apecies, distributions, food habits, and appearing times of Delphacidae in

order to practice the effective and sufficient control on them, the only few

reports on Delphacidae found in the Ryukyu Islands are available.

Tamotsu

Ishihara reported, in 1949, some Araeopidae (=Delphacidae) in Japan,

Ryu-kyu Islands, and Formosa.

In his report, he presented only 4 species, such

as,

Ugyops vittatus, Numata sacchari, Delphacodes striatella, and Sogata

furcifera as the ones fouud in the Ryukyu Islands. Then, Tokuichi Shiraki

(1955) reported 3 species in addition to the above from Ryukyu Islands. So,

many chances for the further study on Delphacidae in the Ryukyus seen

to be still remained.

This report is arranged by depending entirely on the presently

availa-ble index and the specimens owned by the Agriculture, Home Economics

&

Engineering Division, University of the Ryukyus.

Here, 14 spec.ies of

Delphacidae found in the Ryukyus are presented in this report.

In publishing this report, the author wishes to express to Dr. Tamotsu

Ishihara my great appreciation for his advice and suggestion for my study.

1.

The Ryukyu Islands in the report include Okinawa, Miyako and

Yaeyama Islands which were previously referred to as Okinawa Prefecture.

2.

Food in the report are those existing in the Ryukyu Islands.

Both imagoes and larvae are found almost year round, and, sometimes,

the enormous of them are seen at the particular areae.

They are situated

more heavily at mountain valleys than at fields.

As sugar canes are

culti-vated at the broad areae of the country, the writer is pretty sure, judging

from the occurring situation of the species, that they are well spreaded all

over the Ryukyus.
