C.0.D.はidiomを languageofapeopleorcountry;speci丘ccharacterofthis;for皿 ofexpressionpeculiartoalanguage,peculiarity. と 説 明 し て い る が,idiomと はapeculiarityinlanguageと 要 約 出 来 よ う 。 或 る 言 語 を 支 配 す る 文 法 や 論 理 だ け で は 律 し き れ な い そ の 言 語 に 特 有 な 慣 用 的 表 現 で あ る 。 そ し て そ の 言 語 特 有 の 表 現 形 式 を 慣 用 語 法(idiom) と 言 い,そ の 個 々 の 例 を 慣 用 句(idiomaticphrases)と い う 。 ___.言 語 に つ い て の よ う に_{,各 作 家 に も そ れ ぞ れ 独 特 のidiomaticphrases} が あ る 。 そ し て そ のidiomaticphrasesを 理 解 す る こ と は,そ の 作 家 の 作 品 を 読 破 す る に あ た っ て 極 め て 重 要 で あ る 。 S.MaughamはTheWriter'sPointofViewの な か でWehavefound ithardtowritewiththeclarity,precisionandsimplicityofFrench. と 嘆 い て い る が,実 際 に 於 て は 彼 の 文 体 は 平 明 で 読 み や す い と さ れ て い る 。 然 し 私 見 に よ る と,他 の 作 家 の 作 品 に 於 け る よ う に,彼 の 作 品 に も 非 常 に 多 く のidiomaticphrasesが 現 れ て き て 読 者 を 苦 し め る の で あ る 。 私 は そ う し たidiomaticphrasesの な か の い く つ か を,彼 の 多 く の 作 品 の 中 か ら,主 と し て 短 篇 小 説 に 限 定 し て あ げ て み た い と 思 う 。 こ れ は 彼 の 文 章 考 察 の 一 資 料 で あ る 。 (1)andwhatnot andallsortsofthings-P.0.D.andallkindsofotherthingsそ の ほ か 何 や か や Theydiscussedhisideason,theburningquestionsofthedalrand --25一
