Virtual Visit of Historical Observatories 5. Birr Castle and Leviathan Tomokazu KOGURE 1ῌ10 Toganoo, Hashimoto, Yawata, Kyoto 614ῌ 8322, Japan Abstract : In the Birr Castle, Ireland, a great telescope of 183 cm in aperture was constructed by William Parsons, the third Earl of Rosse, in 1845, and it is called Leviathan. With this telescope he discovered spiral nebulae, M51 and others for the first time. He also tried to resolve the nebulae into stars with his colleagues, and finally suggested that nebulae are nothing but stellar clusters. This had been widely accepted until William Huggins’ spectroscopic observations of planetary nebulae. His wife, Mary Parsons, nee Field, not only supported her husband’s work on telescope construction, but also, she was keen in photography in its technical development and in taking artistic photographs. Ireland’s Historic Science Centre inside the demesne features pioneering achievements in fields of astronomy, photography, engineering and horticulture. We make a joyful virtual visit to the Birr Castle, looking back a history of astronomy in 19th century and taking a stroll in beautiful castle garden.. EJ. 2010 3 E.
