古典の良さを追求し継承し、また何か
崩したり工夫したり、両方の挑戦をし
ながら、現代に必要性のあるものにし
ていかなくてはいけないと思っていま
す。 大事なのは、変わらずに繋いでい
くのではなく、変わりながら、肯定しながら否定しながら、その
時代時代の人が一生懸命考えて、時代と共に生きて継承してい
くことだと思います。大田楽能が地域の特色や現代の新しいも
のを組み込んで吸収していけるのは、日本の伝統文化が大きく
てしっかりしているから、揺るがないのです。

As we tackle the dual challenges of pursuing and inheriting the virtues of classics, and of breaking down and devising something, I think that we have to make sure that we create something that the contemporary world needs. Rather than focusing on continuity and connection without changing anything, I believe that it is important for the people of each era to think hard while making changes and while giving positive afi rmation or negating it, and to continue inheriting and passing on traditions while living symbiotically with the times. Daidengaku noh is able to incorporate and absorb local characteristics and contemporary elements only because traditional Japanese culture is massive, i rm, and unwavering.

伝統芸能が長く愛されてきたのは、そこに日
本人の生活に共通した思いがたくさんある
からなんですね。舞踊の振りひとつにして
も、この動きは実はお酒をついでいる意味な
のよとか、そういうことをわからずに見
ているのはもったいないと思うので
す。そこをわかって見ていただければ、
昔の日本の文化もわかるし、きっと現
代にも役立つことがあるはずです。

Traditional arts have remained well-loved for a long time because they carry many sentiments that are universal and shared across the lives of the Japanese people. Even a single dance move can represent, for example, the act of pouring sake into a cup. I think that it is a waste to watch a performance without understanding these moves. If the audience can watch the performances with an understanding of these movements, they would then also gain an understanding of Japanese culture in the past, and I am sure that such an understanding can play a useful role in the contemporary world.

本来文化とは、その根幹が日常生活の中に染み渡っているものです。
日本人であることの連帯感や自然との一体感を味わう、確認し合う。
そうした日本の誇る文化を海外に発信するには、実際に来て感じても
らうのが一番大事だと思います。その意味で国際アート・
カルチャー都市構想には大きな可能性を感じます。文化と
は何か、自分とは誰なのか。何かに参加して「楽しかった」
だけではなく、帰り道に何か新しいことを考える、考えて
みようと思う。そういう知的な刺激が与えられれば、国際
アート・カルチャー都市構想は成功だと言えるでしょう。

The intrinsic nature of culture is that its roots permeate every part of our everyday lives. We experience a sense of solidarity as Japanese people and feel at one with nature, and assure each other of these facts. In order to disseminate this Japanese culture that we take pride in to people around the world, I believe that the key lies in having people come here to experience it for themselves. In that sense, I feel that the International City of Arts & Culture concept holds great potential. What is culture? Who are we? Rather than simply participating in something and enjoying ourselves, I would like us to consider the idea of thinking about something new on the way home. If we could generate such intellectual stimulus in Toshima City, we could probably say that the concept of the International City of Arts & Culture is a success.

国際アート・カルチャー都市構想とは、豊島区全体の都市政
策を考えていくことです。アートやカルチャーは自分たちの
未来のまちづくりの入口であると理解してもらいたいです
ね。トキワ荘はある意味で聖地であり、うまくやれば、豊島
区や池袋は現代の聖地になると思います。それが都市政策の
牽引役になり、まちに人や情報が集まり、もっと
まちを整備しようという動きにつながります。サ
ブカルチャーの聖地である豊島区が、従来から続
く日本文化と融合するまちになれば、こんなにお
もしろいまちはないのではないかと思います。

The concept of the International City of Arts & Culture involves the formulation of urban policies for the whole of Toshima City. We would like everyone to understand that arts and culture can open the door to the future urban development of our city. In a sense, Tokiwaso is a “holy land,” and if we were able to do it well, I think that Toshima City and Ikebukuro can also become the “holy land” of the contemporary world. It will serve as a driving force propelling urban policies forward, attract people and information to the city, and contribute to the growth of a movement to further develop the city. Toshima City is a “holy land” for subculture; if it could become a city that fuses such contemporary culture with traditional Japanese culture, I believe there will be few cities as interesting as Toshima.

まちでいつでもコスプレが見られる場所は、世界でもわ
ずかだと思います。池袋に集まる方は心からコスプレを
愛していて、ルールを決めて、お客さんと一緒に
安全に楽しめる空間を作ってこられたのは大き
いです。特別視されないから、趣味をオープン
にして仲間を作り、自分を表現できる。コス
プレを楽しむイベントは実現しつつあるの
で、これからは見に来る人も一緒に楽しめ
る、ニューヨークの感謝祭パレードのよ
うな、世界中から注目されるイベントを
やってみたいですね。

I think that there are very few places in the world where you can always i nd people dressed in cosplay in the city. It is signii cant that the people who gather in Ikebukuro love cosplay from the bottom of their hearts, and have determined the rules and worked together with the audience to create a safe and fun space. As they are not perceived in a special light, they can be open about their hobby, make friends, and express themselves. There is a growing number of events for enjoying cosplay, so I would really like to organize an event that will also be fun for the spectators, and which will attract worldwide attention like the Thanksgiving Day Parade held in New York.

最近のゲームやアニメでは、歴史に
根ざした事象をキャラクターにして
大変人気になっていますが、これは
実は、能が600年前からやっていた
ことで、両者が現代になって融合し
たというのは、ごく自然なことだと言
えるかもしれません。能だけの世界
観ではなく、マンガやアニメなどい
ろいろなアートとコラボレーション
ができる、歴史と現代の接点がこういう形になっていくとい
うことをぜひアピールしていきたいですね。

Recently, games and anime that feature characters developed based on historical events have become very popular. In fact, this is something that noh has been doing since 600 years ago, and we could perhaps say that it is very natural for the two to become fused together in contemporary times. I hope that we can draw attention to the appeal of developing a common ground between history and modernity by expanding the worldview of noh and collaborating with various art forms such as manga and anime.

ティが形成されているという点で、ニコニコ動画と池袋
は似ています。ネットの持つ面白さと、リアルな
まちをつなげることができたら、まちを劇場に
することが可能になってくると思います。バー
チャルとリアルの境界線を超えたプラット
フォームをどのように作るのか。どういう部分
にバーチャルが必要なのか。すべての世代
に対してどういうまちであるべきなのか。
そういう視点に立ったまちづくりは、ま
だどこも挑戦していないはずです。

Niconico and Ikebukuro are similar in the sense that a single community is established on top of various categories. If we were able to connect the interesting aspects of the Internet with a physical city in reality, I believe it would be possible to transform the city into a theater. How can we create a platform that transcends the boundary between the virtual and reality? Which are the aspects that require the virtual? What should a city be like for all generations? I do not think that there are any places that have taken up the challenge of approaching urban development from such a perspective.
