Explanations of Women's Under—representation in Japanese Local Politics

This paper aims to explain women's under—representation in local politics by analyzing interviews for women councillors, which have been undertaken from 1998 to 2000 by Prof Kasuga and I. A variety of explanations have been put forward for this including discrimination by electors and selectors. There are a wide variety of explana-tions of problems of women's under—representation. We categorised the numerous explanations into two kinds of factors, individual factors and structural factors. Here, we explore the individual factors which include family responsibilities and commitments, family support, individual circumstances, availability of and control over financial resources, political ambition, experience of work outside the home and psychological factors such as confidence and self—esteem.

The Social Experiment of Traffic System for the Vitalization of Asuka-village

The social experiment of traffic system in this time carried out the vitalization of Asuka-village with the view point that intends the increase of the tourist. The effect such as the improvement of the convenience nature to the effect and the aged of the movement traffic means within the increase and village of the visit point by the efficient movement the traffic system inside the village that combined, both of the rental cycle and buses as a result was ad-mitted. The subject became clear about the correspondence to the upgrading and new sightseeing position of the traffic system of the sightseeing of Asuka-village from those. This is important even from the view point of the reduction of the environment load by the obstruction avoidance and automobile to the life traffic of a local end resi-dent in addition to sightseeing. We need to think the plan that embodies it from now on.
