Early Modern Women's Writingにおける BE+V-ing構造

Abstract

With their seemingly slovenly usage, non-literary works or minor ones as observed here have long been -overlooked in the literature. However, such works as well as highly valued ones reflect the majority usage. The aim of this paper is to investigate the BE + V-ing construction in Early Modern Women's Writing: An Anthology, 1560-1700, and to reconsider the usage of the form in the Early Modern English period, which is called "a transitional period" in the development of the construction.

1 . はじめに

永 尾 のような特徴を持つHCを使った研究の多 くで、

私的書簡、 演劇、 裁判録など、 代表的で著名な 文芸散文とは異なるジャンルの散文で顕著な史 的特性変化が現れる傾向が強いことが示されて いる。 また、 そのような研究結果は、 観察の視 座を言語理論、 語法研究、 社会言語学のいずれ においても、 テキストタイプ、 レジス タ^ーを考 慮した英語史研究（具体的には、 標準化に関す る研究、 ヴァリエ^ーションに関する研究など）

が求められていることを示している。 また、 統 語法変化の中で「話し言葉の律動」や「 ジャンル の違い（文体の違い）」といった言語要因を考よ うとするためにも、 テキスト タイ プやレジス

タ^ーを考慮した考察が求められる。

EModEの散文の統語法と文体に関する研究 には、 国内では今井(1978) 等がある。 近年 で は、 EModEの非文芸散文に見られる標準化現 象を扱った研究(Rissanen(2000))がある。 特に 後者は、 標準化を議論する上での観察対象に非 文芸作品を使用している点で注 目すべき研究 である。 しかし、 これまでに積み上げられて きた英語史研究には、 非文芸作品（文学史上で 当該の時代を代表する著名な文芸作家による 作品や宗教散文以外の作品） を観察対象とする 研究はその絶対数が少な く、 少な くとも日本 国内で見れば著名作家による世俗散文やPaston Letters 等の代表的文芸作品を対象とした、 テキ スト・ヴァリエ^ーションの狭い研究のみである。

Paston Lettersについても、 Davis(1955)および Masui (1962)等の包括的研究を超える研究が現 れていないことに加えて、 対象とする時代が本 稿とは異なる。

対象が文芸散文偏重となる最大の原因は、 テ キスト入手が困難なことであろう。 しかし、

Davis (1955)、 Masui(1962)から約半 世紀を経 た今日では、 以降の文学研究で資料の掘り起こ しが進んだこともあり、 従来看過されてきたテ キストタイプ、 レ ジス タ^ーに属するものの入手 が容易になってきている。 これは、 英語史研究 の観察対象の幅が拡大してきていることを意味 する。 従来の英語史研究、 散文史研究の再吟味 が可能になってきているのである。

3. 資 料

本稿では、 そのような資料のうち、 特に、

「散文の枇紀」と呼ばれる時代に属する資料の 一つを観察対象として、 EModEにおける英語 統語法のうち、 P 構造を観察する。 本稿で扱う テキストは、

である。 この選集には16世紀後半 から17世紀全 般に亘る、 執筆者11人による39作品が載録され ている。 この選集に収められた資料の作者名

（網掛け表示）、 作者生年（ないしは活躍年） （網 掛け表示）、 テキスト名、 出版年 （特定可能な 場合のみ）は、 次のとおりである。

このように、 旧来の英語史研究における観察対

象とはテキスト ^・ヴァリエーションの異なる資

料ばかりである。

なお、 ここでは先述のように、 非文芸作品を 文学史上で当該の時代を代表する著名な文芸作

家による作品や宗教散文以外の作品として捉え る。 また、 コーパス言語学では一般に特定語数 のデータを各テキスト・ヴァリエーションから 取り出して観察するが、 本稿ではそのような手

法は取らず、 先に示した選集全体について観察 する。²

4 . EModEの進行形P構造

EModEの動詞旬構造はPDEのそれより単純 なものであり、 動詞組織の各要素が今日よりも

幅広い意味領域を占め、 その系列的関係はPDE

とは異なった、 柔軟性を持った関係であった。³

特に特徴的なのは接続法、 法助動詞、 時制に 影響する助動詞、 受動態、 進行形p構造であっ た。 本節では、 英語史でみる進行形P構造の構

造、 機能、 および意味的特徴を Denison(1998) とRissanen(1999) に基づいて整理してみる。

4.1. EModE以前の進行形P構造

, Denison (1998)、 Rissanen(1999) の双方と も、 古英語における進行形p構造の状況には 深入りせず、 数種の見解に触れながらも最終 的にはJespersen(1931) を起点に説明する。 こ のような慎重姿勢は、 Mitchell(1985) がアスペ

クトを古英語の動詞範疇として認めず、⁴古英

語におけるP構造をPDEにおける進行形p構造 に相当するものとして認めながらも(there can

be no doubt that we have in these combinations the genesis of the MnE continuous tenses. (§694))、

解釈・用法面で対応していないとすることを考

えれば首肯できる。⁵

Denison (1993, 1998) も 認 め る よ う に、

Mitchell (1985)はP構造が構造として存在する こと自体を否定するわけではない。①—ing構造 が動詞的構成素、 名詞的構成素の何れである かという問題、 ②分詞の同格的用法(appositive

use) や形容詞の叙述用法との分別に関して解釈 が曖昧となっているという2点の問題があるた

めに、 進行形p構造の機能・意味的存在に関し

て否定的見解をとっているのである。⁶

Jespersen (1931) は、 進行形^P構造の通史を、

I am on reading > I am a-reading > I am reading

とする。 確かに、 これだけでは上述の二つの問 題点は解決できない。 そこで、 ^Denison(1998)

および^Rissanen (1999) は、 ^P構造の古英語にお

ける状況を、 ^Jespersen(1931) の見解にある構 造と、 ^PDEの進行形^p構造と構造的に同^一の構 造とが並存状況にあるという説明に留めてい る。そして、 後者が前者を駆逐するのがModE

期であるとする。

4.2. EModEの進行形P構造

Shakespeareに おける 進 行 形P構 造 と単純 構造との並存からもうかがわ れ る ように、

EModE期は、 進行形p構造の使用が不安定な

時代であった。それでも使用例から判断して、

Denison (1998)は、 ModE初期には^P構造の存在 そのものは定着していたとする。^{7 一}方^Rissanen (1999)は、 17世紀を進行形p構造の大転換期と 位置づけ、 各時制での進行形P 構造の使用と能 動・受動形式に分かれた使用の完成期を18世紀 末としている。⁸

進行形^p構造の意味特性に関しても両者の 捉え方には違いが 見られる。 それは、 Visser

(1973) が示す進行形P構造の本質的意味、 お よび中心的機能に関する捉え方である。^Visser (1973)は、 進行形^p構造の意味特性に関する複

合機能説を退けて、

(1998)に比べてRissanen(1999)は、 複合機能説 に傾いている。 両者の違いは、 ^Denison(1998) が^LModE、 ^Rissanen(1999) が^EModEという異 なる時代を扱うことによる違いと考えることも できるが、 両者はModEにおける進行形p構造 の意味的特徴として見解を示しているのである

い。^EModEにおける進行形^P構造は、 構造的・

意味的特性を明確に述べる段階には、 未だ至っ ていない。^EModEにおける進行形P構造を明 確に規定するのが難しいのは、 上述のように、

Mitchell (1985)が指摘する古英語の^P構造に関

する問題が未解決であることによる。

ここで、 ^EModEの進行形^p構 造について、

Rissanen (1999) によってその特徴を挙げると、

次のようになる。

①進行形p構造が動詞組織内でアスペクト 表示機能を持つのは1700年頃までに完了し た。

② ^Visser (1973) が主張する「行動枠」として

の中核意味については、 進行形p構造の必 要条件と断定することはできない。

③ 進行形^p構造にはsubjective/emotive force

がある。

④ always, ever, continually等の副詞の共起に よって、 習慣的・反復的行為のニュアンス が表される。

⑤状態動詞の進行形p構造は^一般的ではな い (Visser(1973)がこの時期のbe/haveの進 行形の例を示すが、 ^一般的ではない）。

⑥ EModEでは^on+V-ingは^a+V-ingより少数。

18世紀でも^upon等、 他 の 前置詞が現れ ることがある ^(Lowthはこの時期の^a+V­

ingについて、 厳格な文体では古式 だが、

familiar discourseでは広く顕在す るとす

る）。

⑦動詞的 タイプが名詞的 タイプを駆逐する のは^ModEであるが、 17世紀でも、 名詞的 タイ プが公的文書、 教育的文書で見られ る。 18世紀中に名詞的 タイプが非標準化す る。HCに見られる名詞的 タイプは、 1640 - 1710期で半ダ^ース以下であり、 フィク ション、 私的書簡、 喜劇で見られる。

⑧ I am to I I'm going to構造は、 中英語に遡る が、 17世紀末には^一般的になる。 義務や意

図の含意が初期の例でも見られる。

⑨ be about to構造は、 初期の例でも計画的行

為といったアスペクト含意を持っていた。

⑩未来進行形は16 - 17世紀には^一般的では ない。現在進行形が、 主としてmotion verb と共起するときには、 その行為が前以て計 画されたものであることを示せた。

⑪受 身 意 味 の 能 動 進 行 形 で は、 主語が inanimate であり、 能動意味の場合の主語 はanimateとなるのが^一般的である。

⑫ 受身進行形(The house is being built.)が現 れるのはEModE末期(1800年頃）である。

これらに加えて、 Strang(1982)が指摘する次 の3点は、 EModEでの検討が必要となる点で ある。

⑬ 18世紀前期の進行形p 構造は、 口語散文 で、 時、 場所、 関係詞節などの従属節での 使用が"truely at home"である。

⑭従属節の数自体は少ないが、18世紀から 19世紀における進行形p 構造の増加は、 従 属節での生起数が増加していることが大き

く作用している。

⑮ 1800年頃の小説では、 過去形での使用が 大幅に増える。

5 . Early Modern Women's WritingのP構造 本節ではP構造全体、 すなわちBE とV-ingが 共起する全ての用例を取り出す（ただし、 副詞 のV-ing の例は除 く）。 従って、 形容詞の叙述用 法等も含むことになる（形容詞の叙述用法には に） を、 be (un-)willing 構造には（＊）を、 例文番 号の右肩に付す）。また、 be going to 構造には

『） を付す。 なお、 極めて頻度の高い分詞同格 用法は、 別の議論を要するため、 本稿では対象 から外す。¹⁰

種類の動詞で見られる。 出現 の時期、 韻文での使用例が低いこと、 自他の偏 り 、 時制形式や能動・受動の別などの形式的な 多様性が低いことより、 17世紀における進行形 p 構造の拡がりが緩慢であったことがうかがわ れる。 しかし、 「話し言葉の律動」 や「 ジャンル の違い（文体の違い）」 といった言語要因を考え るには、 更に多 くの用例を使った観察が必要で あ る。 また、 アスペ ク ト特性を考える上では、

進行形p構造と^一般形との比較を含ん だ、 動詞 システム 全体からの考察が必要となる。 語彙と 資料について観察の幅を広げた考察が求められ る。
