長崎県の概要

Outline of Nagasaki Prefecture

日本列島の最西端にある長崎県は、南北に長く、豊かな山の緑と海に囲ま

れています。島の数は約９７１

（全国１位）

あり、海岸線は全国２位の長さがあり

ます。

また、長崎は地理的条件により、古くから外国文化を受け入れてきました。鎖

国時代も世界に開かれた国際貿易港として栄え、大陸や西洋の情報が入り、

日本文化と海外文化が融合した長崎独特の文化が築かれました。現在も長

崎の伝統行事や風俗文化、宗教など、当時を偲ばせるものが数多くみられま

す。

そして、長崎は、世界最後の被爆県として、世界に向けて平和の尊さを発

信する

「平和都市」

としての役割も担っています。

Nagasaki, the westernmost prefecture of the Japanese archipelago, stretches from north to south and surrounded by lush green mountains and the ocean. It has the largest number of islands（９７１）and the second longest coastline in Japan.

Because of its geographical location, Nagasaki has a long history of accepting foreign cultures. Even throughout Japan's period of isolation, Nagasaki prospered as an international trading port, receiving a constant flow of information from China and Western countries. Such an environment allowed Nagasaki to develop a unique regional culture incorporating elements of Japanese and foreign cultures. Nagasaki's traditional events, customs, cultural practices and religions are among the many reminders of its past as Japan's sole international trading port. Today, as the world's most recent victim of atomic bombing, Nagasaki plays a role as a capital of peace by spreading awareness of the preciousness of peace to the world.

西を東シナ海、北は対馬海峡に面している長崎県。東シナ海から対馬海峡

を対馬暖流が流れている影響もあり、寒暖の差が小さく全般的に温かい気候

です。

Nagasaki Prefecture is bordered on the west by the East China Sea, and on the north by the Tsushima Straits. Due to the warm Tsushima Current, which flows from the East China Sea through the Tsushima Straits, Nagasaki has a relatively mild climate with a narrow temperature range.

Kwassui Women’s University was established in 1879 by Ms. Eliza-beth Russell who was a missionary from the United States. Kwassui is still seeking to provide a broad education rooted in the Christian spirit in which the school was founded and to raise up students who can be sent out into the world having developed international per-spectives. １８７９年に活水女学校として開学した活水学院。活水の名前は、聖書のヨ ハネ福音書４章１４節「活きた水」に由来しています。現在、文学部（英語学 科、現代日本文化学科、人間関係学科）、音楽学部（音楽学科）、健康生活 学部（食生活健康学科、生活デザイン学科、子ども学科）、看護学部（看護学 科）の４学部８学科と文学部英語専攻の１大学院を擁しています。東山手 キャンパス、新戸町キャンパス、大村キャンパスの３つのキャンパスがあります。 留学生のために外国人特別入学試験を行っています。また、大学間の協定 に基づく交換留学生の受け入れを積極的に行っています。

【住環境】

日本人学生との共用の２６０名収容の学生寮があります。２名１部屋で朝 食、夕食を提供します。留学生の学生寮希望者は入居できます。大学と学生 寮のある新戸町キャンパスの間はシャトルバスで送迎します。また、大学周辺 のアパート等への入居のサポートも行っています。

【留学生サポート窓口】

留学生のサポートは国際交流・留学センターで行っています。また、所属学 科での教育面でのサポート、就職活動は就職課が全面的にサポートします。

【奨学金制度】

本学独自の勤労奨学生制度、父母会奨学金の制度を設けています。また 日本学生支援機構の私費外国人留学生学習奨励費、短期留学生交流支 援奨学金、米山ロータリー奨学金、中島平和財団奨学金、朝鮮奨学会奨学 金等を受給しています。

【日本語学習環境】

本学の日本語教育は、大学での授業を受講するための予備教育、補習教 育にとどまらず、日本語の運用能力を高める目的で開講します。日本語を 使ってビジネスシーンで活躍できる人材の養成をめざしています。日本語を学 ぶと同時に、日本語を取り巻く社会や文化を学ぶことにより、より日本語能力 を高めます。「日本語リテラシー」の力をつけることになります。実践的な日本 語能力を身に付けるために支援をします。

Kwassui Gakuin was established as Kwassui Girls’School in 1879.

The name of Kwassui means“living water”and comes from the Bible verse where Christ Jesus refers to the“living water”which can satisfy the thirst of the human spirit (John 4: 14).

Kwassui Women’s University now has a Faculty of Humanities (Departments of English, Contemporary Japanese Culture, and Human Relations); a Faculty (Department) of Music; a Faculty of Wellness Studies (Department of Nutritional Health, Department of Design and Science for Human Life, and Child Development & Education); and a Faculty (Department) of Nursing. There is also a Graduate School (for English Literature and Language); Kwassui Women’s University has three campuses: at Higashiyamate, Shintomachi and Omura.

Kwassui Women’s University has a special entrance exam for international students and is happy to enter into cooperative agreements with universities to benefit both institutions.

【Living Environment】

The Student Residence Hall (Nankoryo) is a 10-storey building for 260 students on the Shinto-machi campus. International students are provided breakfast and dinner each day.

There is a free shuttle bus service between this campus and the Higashi-Yamate campus. Both Japanese and international students can live in Nankoryo. Rooms are normally Western-style twin arrangement.

【International Student Support Services】

The International Student Exchange Center functions to provide support for international students in both daily life and college life.

Each department also functions to provide support for international students in education.

The Employment office functions to provide support in job hunting for international students

【Scholarship Programs】

Kwassui Women’s University has a work-study system and also Parents’ Association Scholarships. Privately financed international exchange students may receive scholarships from the Japan Student Services Organization, its Student Exchange Support Program (scholarships for short-term study in Japan), the Rotary Yoneyama Memorial Foundation Scholarship, the Heiwa Nakajima Foundation, and the Korean Scholarship Foundation.

【Japanese Language Learning Environment】

The Japanese language program is not limited to preparation for regular university classes and supplementary lessons, but seeks to improve students’ overall practical Japanese ability. We aim to produce people who can use Japanese to conduct business. Students learn about the society and culture which form the setting for Japanese, as well as studying the language itself, and so improve their Japanese ability. Students are given support to gain practical Japanese skills and to increase their powers of Japanese literacy.

１８５７年に開かれた医学伝習所を創基とし、１９４９年５月３１日に国立大学 設置法により総合大学として新制長崎大学が設置され、２００４年４月に国立 大学法人となりました。 ８学部５大学院１研究所を有する総合大学で、熱帯医学、感染症、放 射線医療科学などの特色ある研究を推進しています。ケニア、ベトナム、ウクラ イナの３カ国に研究拠点を持ち、海外の１０４の大学と交流協定を結んで、学 術・学生交流を活発に促進しています。 本学には中国、韓国をはじめメキシコ、ケニア、オランダといった世界３７カ国 から３６５人の留学生が学んでおり、彼らの円滑な学習や研究を支援するため のサポート制度も充実しています。また、授業を英語で受講することができる １年間の短期留学プログラムも開講しています。 ２００８年には、本学の卒業生である下村脩博士がオワンクラゲから緑色蛍 光タンパク質（GFP）を発見したことにより２００８年にノーベル化学賞を受賞い たしました。

【住環境】

西町と坂本に「国際交流会館」を完備しており、約１８０人を収容することが できます。西町会館は文教キャンパスから徒歩で約１５分、坂本会館は坂本 キャンパスから徒歩で約１０分の場所に位置しています。日常生活に必用な 家電品がほとんど揃っており、入居したその日から安心して留学生活を始め ることができます。

【留学生サポート窓口】

国際交流課と留学生センターで留学生の学習面、生活面における諸問題 に対応しています。国際交流課には中国語と韓国語、そして英語に堪能な職 員を配置し、まだ来日して間もない日本語や日本の習慣に不慣れな留学生 にも十分に対応できるよう配慮しています。

【奨学金制度】

日本学生支援機構の学習奨励費をはじめ、地元の企業等が提供している 奨学金や本学独自の奨学金、そして研究奨励金があります。また、正規学生 で成績が優秀でありながら経済的な問題を抱えている方は、授業料の全額ま たは半額の免除を受けることができます。２００９年度には、６８％の留学生が奨 学金や授業料免除の経済的支援を受けています。

【日本語学習環境】

留学生の日本語教育や生活・修学を支援することを目的に留学生セン ターが設置されています。本センターでは、留学生各人のレベルに応じた日本 語学習を行うだけでなく、留学生の家族に対しても日本語学習を提供してい ます。また、日本古来の文化を体験してもらえるよう、茶道や華道などの授業も 行っています。

Nagasaki University, which was formed from Japan’s oldest medical school, has achieved its remarkable development of today after over-coming the unbearable sorrow at the loss of hundreds of precious lives of students, faculty and administrative staff due to the atomic bomb. The basic objectives of the University may be expressed as follows:“Nagasaki University continues its role as a‘center for the transmission of intellectual information’which is indispensable for the world,”aiming at the world's best research for the contribution to global peace as well as the education of personnel competent to make such a noble goal possible.

Nagasaki University originated from Japan's oldest medical school called Igaku Denshusho established in 1857. The University was newly founded on May 31, 1949 after emerging some existing schools and colleges under the National School Establishment Law and reorganized as a National University Corporation in April, 2004. It consists of eight faculties, five graduate schools, and one research institute, and promotes distinguished research such as tropical medicine, infectious diseases, and radiology. It has research centers in Kenya, Vietnam, and the Ukraine, and has concluded academic exchanges with 104 overseas research institutions to boost academic and student exchange. 365 international students from 37 different countries are currently studying at Nagasaki University, which provides them with a support system to facilitate their study and research. The University has also opened a one-year short program.

Dr. Osamu Shimomura, who is an alumnus of Nagasaki University, won the Nobel Prize Chemistry in 2008 for the discovery of Green Fluorescent Protein from Aequorea victoria.

【Living Environment】

Nagasaki University has two International Houses, in Nishimachi and Sakamoto, with the combined capacity for about 180 international students and researchers. Nishimachi International House is 15 minutes on foot from Bunkyo Campus (main campus), whereas Sakamoto International House is 10 minutes on foot from Sakamoto Campus (medical schools and related institutes).

The International Houses are equipped with most daily necessities so students can start their new life with ease from the very first day they arrive in Nagasaki.

【International Student Support Services】

The International Exchange Division and the International Student Center deal with international students’various affairs and possible problems associated with study and daily life. The International Exchange Division assigns staff members who are proficient in Chinese, Korean, and English in order to give due consideration to students who are new to Japan and not familiar with Japanese customs.

【Scholarship Programs】

Nagasaki University provides grants and scholarships of the Japan Student Services Organization and local companies as well as its original scholarship and research grants. Also, the University can offer exemption from payment of full or half tuition to regular students who achieve high grades but have financial difficulties. 68% of the international students received some kind of financial aid in FY 2009.

【Japanese Language Learning Environment】

Nagasaki University has set up the International Student Center in order to support international students with Japanese language skills development and in their daily life and study. The International Student Center provides Japanese language study not only to students but also to their family members according to their language proficiency. It also teaches tea ceremony and flower arrangement to give students and their family members opportunities to appreciate old Japanese traditions.

Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies was founded as Nagasaki College of Foreign Languages in 1945 on the foundation of the Christian spirit of peace and coexistence. Its motto is“To foster mutual understanding between people by the study of languages and culture.”

The university consists of a Faculty of Foreign Studies with a Department of English, and a Department of International Communications. Students can major in German, French, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese at the Department of International Communications.

We have sophisticated professor advisor and student tutor systems. You are very welcome to ask questions to both professors and students. We have some personnel at administrative office commanding English and Chinese. There are a variety of exchange events and activities on and off campus all around a year, providing good chances to experience Japanese culture firsthand.

【Scholarship Programs】

Around 40% of foreign students receive extramural undergraduate scholarship programs. We have two our original scholarship programs: tuition waiver program and working scholarship. The former waives tuition of foreign students from 40% to 100% according to their achievements and other factors.

【Japanese Language Learning Environment】

We have 11 classes covering four academic years according to their proficiency. Students are placed to the class suitable for your proficiency and can work on cultivating four key language abilities: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. We have your Japanese conversation partners interested in exchanging in foreign languages, so you have plenty of chances to instruct each other, which is one of the characteristics of NUFS. The true meaning of hospitality through the tea ceremony

The tea ceremony is one feature of our curriculum. Tea ceremony classes provide students with a chance to learn about the history of the tea ceremony and how to perform it in our on-campus tea house. These classes embody NIU’s founding principle of hospitality.

Practical training and small class sizes

Classes provide practical training and education, both on and off campus, so that students have the skills to hit the ground running upon entering the workforce. Faculty members also provide personalized guidance to students based on their individual questions and needs.

Seminar Classes

Starting from year 1,all students enroll in small seminar classes. These provide a great learning environment to exchange ideas with other students and faculty supervisors.

NIU has 2 apartment buildings for international students. Accommodation is shared with 2 private rooms per apartment. NIU also has partnerships with several realtors who can arrange other accommodation in line with students’ requests before arriving in Japan. Rent typically ranges from 25,000-40,000 JPY per month.

【International Student Support Services】

When it comes to supporting international students, you don't have to look farther than our International Center. In addition to our Japanese staff, we have a full time staff from China（２），Korea（２），and Canada（１）who are dedicated to meeting the needs of overseas students. To help students make a smooth transition to NIU, the staff assist in finding accommodation and part-time jobs, and are available to help students with any problems they may have or just to chat. The International Center is here to support you.

【Scholarship Programs】

International students who have passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test receive tuition reductions of 30-50%. Each year, approximately 100 scholarships are made available to international students at NIU from groups such as JASSO and Rotary.

長崎総合科学大学は、１９４２年に創立された歴史と伝統ある私立大学で す。前身は、川南高等造船学校で、現在は、大学院工学研究科、工学部、情 報学部、環境・建築学部、別科日本語研修課程、附属高等学校および付置 研究所を擁する大学へと進展しました。 本学の特色ある学科の一つである工学部船舶工学科は、日本の大学でも 数少ない学科です。船舶工学科では船と海に関する専門知識を修得するこ とによって、優れた船舶を設計建造できる技術者や、海洋の環境を保全し活 用する専門家を育成しています。長崎総合科学大学の前身である長崎造船 大学には、１９６０年代以降、シンガポールやマレーシアなどから留学生を受け 入れていました。数多くの卒業生が社会に大きく貢献しています。 本学は２１世紀社会にとって最も大切な技術、情報、環境をキーワードに、時 代と社会の要請に応え得る人材の育成と輩出に全力で取り組んでいます。

【日本語学習環境】

別科日本語研修課程は、日本の大学や大学院に進学を希望する外国人 を対象に設けられた修業年限１年の日本語研修課程です。大学での講義 を理解するために必要な日本語能力を習得することを目的としています。ま た、大学教育を受けるために必要な基礎学力を身につけることを目的として、 数学、英語などの教科の教育も行います。１クラスの学生数が最大１１人なの で、教師が個々の学生のレベルをきちんと把握し、きめの細かい教育を行うこ とができます。クラスは、日本語能力別に２クラス設定されています。１年間 のカリキュラムを通じて、まったく日本語ができない留学生でも、日常会話はも ちろんのこと、新聞の社説などが理解できるまで、徹底した指導を行います。 なお、本学学部に進学を希望する学生のみなさんのために、特別推薦入 学制度があります。
