Selectingsignals from differentsensory rnedalities
and bindingthernappropriately as asingle event are
necessar}r toensure a stable perceptual world and to
guide appropriate actions tothe external world. To
do so, the brain is!ikelytouse both low-level
struc-turalfactorssuch as spatial cojncidence and
tempo-ral synchrony between the slgna]s, and cognitive
iactorssuch as semantic congruency. Research into
multisensory perception has grown spectacularly in
the lastdecade,and revealed that differentsensory
modalities are rnore closely related and mutually
interplayingthan classical views had assumed. The
airn of thissympesium was tohave a discussionof
the binding mechanisms of multisensory signals,
particularlyaddressing two topicsof continuing
in-terest:audio-visual interactionand the rnultimoda]
interactionon self-metion perception,
We invitedthree distinguishedresearchers tothis
symposium. Dr. Mark E. McCaur't described the
al-terationof a tempora] window of audio-visual inter-actions dependent on stimulus intensity.Dr. Kenzo
Sakuraj introduced spatial and temporal ranges for audio-visual interactions inrnotion perception, and
visual-vestibular interactionson headingperception,
Dr.BernhardE.Rieckeshowed multisensory

inten-sively discussedtheissuesof processing-levels--thc
