Abstract
A Process of Successful Product-commercialization
Mainly on the collaborative development of cup-noodles
Masaaki KANEMOTO
In our college, we have used “Virtual Company” as a teaching material for six years. Since 2005, we took ‘Understanding of the local industry’ to be the main concept and ‘Gunma’, the keyword of the product development. We have required students to find the support enterprises, the enterprises for advice on product development, marketing and public relations related to Virtual Company for themselves and to participate in the Trade Fair.
As for the achievement of this Virtual Company, our college has won first prize at the Trade Fair for four consecutive years since 2005. The program also received the Executive Committee Prize for the Industry-academia Collaboration with Local Corporations Employing a Virtual Company in the Eighth Contest of Internet Application to Educational Activities in Japan. This external evaluation proves that using Virtual Company as a method of teaching has been successful.
As another great achievement, some of the students’ products started being actually commercialized through the activity of Virtual Company in 2007. The first of such products was the “Cold Noodle Series” of “Yaomai”. “Yaomai” became “Yumendo”, and kept acting even throughout the following year. The commodity developed as a result of the second-year activity was “Isesaki Yaki Udon”.
This paper reviews the two-year activity of “Yaomai” through “Yumendo” reexamining the minutes made by Daikokufoods Corporation Company and the interviews with the participants at that time. In so doing, the paper discusses why the commercialization succeeded, how the project is evaluated, and what is prospected for future problems.
