A study of the Artist-in-residence (AIR) in the traditional craft production area of Japan and
Taiwan:
Through the case in Shiga Prefecture and Yingge town of the ceramics area

Abstract:This paper studies an Artist-in-residence (AIR) program of traditional ceramics town in Japan and Taiwan. Artist-in-residence (AIR) began in Berlin in the 1970s. AIR program gives the opportunity to work in different locations to modern artists in Japan and Taiwan. Contemporary Art is playing a role to present the point of view of the criticism against the Academy of museums and arts. The AIR has begun as a methodology of criticism against such existing authority. In Japan and Taiwan, the AIR has been accepted in the traditional production area of ceramics. This paper was examined the history of the AIR in both regions. Then, I will present the current status of the AIR in Japan and Taiwan. And I tried to discuss the role of the AIR for the activation of the region.
