英語(問題用紙)
1.次の英文は,中学生の健太(Kenta)が,おもてなしの心(Omotenashispirit)についてした英語のスピーチ です。英文を読んであとの問いに答えなさい。
Do you know the word "Omotenashi" ? People have used it a lot since Ms.Takigawa used it in the last speech for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic bid. You maybe think that Omotenashi spirit means welcoming other people and making other people happy, but the origin of it is different.
Omotenashi spirit started in the Edo period. In this period, the city of Edo became very crowded.
The people in Edo needed to live without troubles, so they acted nice to each other. For example, what do you do if someone steps on your toes? Do you get angry? People in Edo said, "I'm sorry", when someone stepped on their toes. Edo people thought they bothered the person. This was called "Edo shigusa"and became the origin of Omotenashi spirit. That spirit continues now.
We still can see some examples of Omotenashi spirit in Japan today. People riding in a taxi don't have to open taxi doors in Japan. It is not necessary for Japanese taxi drivers to open the taxi door.
They do so because they just think about the person using taxi. Restrooms in Japan are very clean.
We don't need to keep the restrooms clean because it is someone else's job. We do so because we just think about the person using the restroom after us. It is not a special thing for Japanese people. We do such things without thinking, but foreign people are surprised to see that. I think they are impressed with the way of Japanese people thinking of others.
Why do Japanese people think this way? Japan has had many natural disasters and we needed to help each other. So we try to make other people happy without getting something in return. For example, Japanese people do not work for tips.
However, sometimes when Japanese people have communication with foreign people in English, we cannot say, "No." because we worry too much about other people's feelings. This is not good in business with foreign people. It is important for Japanese people to understand the good and bad things aboutOmotenashi spirit if we want to succeed in business in the world.
I think that the Omotenashi spirit in Japan is the best in the world, so we should be very proud of ourOmotenashi spirit and act with this Omotenashi spirit.

He traveled around the world to learn about education. During the trip, he was very impressed with young people playing sports. They were learning many things through sports. He found that sports are very important in education. After the trip, he invited some foreign players to France and played some sports together. They were from different countries, but enjoyed playing sports together. He found that sports could become a bridge between countries for peace. He wanted to make friendship through sports. In 1896, thanks to him, the first Olympics were held.
Momoko : Wow, he is great.
Sakura : Later, he made the symbol of the Olympics with blue, yellow, black, green and red circles on white paper. He used those six colors because you can make most of the flags in the world with those colors.
Momoko : I have heard "The most important thing in the Olympics is to join, not just to win." Are these his words?
Sakura : No, a minister said these words when an English player and an American player didn't have a good friendship at the Olympics. Pierre was moved by his words, so these words became one of the Olympics mottos. Pierre also said, "We can make a peaceful world if we can make our mind
and body strong through sports".He died in 1937, but his message has continued to today.
