Speech-phrases Suggestion System for

Nonnative Member in Group-discussion

In the recent years, along with the development of globalization, the number of students abroad in Japan increases grammatically. In order to gain more knowledge in their specific academic areas, it’s essential for them to have Face-to-Face discussions and dialogs fluently with Japanese students. However, problems and obstacles also exist simultaneously, mainly due to the insufficiency of their vocabulary and the difficulty in judging the appropriate of used words in different circumstances. As a result, many foreign students become unconfident in dialogs. They often can not catch up with others and sometimes even remain silent.

In order to find a solution, the Speech–phase Suggestion System is developed with aim of providing language support for nonnative speakers and enabling them to have more fluent and free discussions. The system, being based on Speech Recognition technology, makes Speed–phase Suggestions by taking and analyzing key words in dialogs in turns. The first functional step of this system is offering effective suggestions to nonnative speakers with the normal or common phases. Then by listing the errors and the corresponding corrections during the course, it reduces the concern and flurry of the nonnative speakers. Furthermore, it helps the nonnative speakers to have better understanding of the conversation by providing synonymous words and the native translations of the key words.

By making comparison of experiments between [group-discussion by using E-dictionary] and [group-discussion by using system], we conclude that the participants have a better satisfaction with the dialog, and a better impression of each other. And thus, the effectiveness of this system is proved.
