LOGICAL REASONING REVIEW

Logical Reasoning Section evaluates your ability to understand,analyze, and criticize the arguments in the passages. To do well on this section you must be able to reason critically and logically. This section has approximately 23 mini-passages,each of which is followed by one or two questions. Each section has a total of 24-26 questions,with a 35 minute time limit. The mini-passages are usually 20 to 100 words long and are drawn from a variety of sources. The sources include articles in humanities, the social and natural sciences, editorials, advertisements,and speeches. Some of the passages may also be fictional conversations or arguments created especially for the test.

There are nine basic types of Logical Reasoning questions. Each of the questions requires you to perform one of the following logical operations:

1. Questions that ask you to determine the main point or conclusion of an argument;

2. Questions that ask you to detect the underlying assumption of an argument;

3. Questions that ask you to form a conclusion based on the premises or evidence provided;

4. Questions that ask you to identify the principles being applied in the passage and apply those principles to a different case;

5. Questions that ask you to determine the method of argument or persuasion being used;

6. Questions that ask you to find errors and misinterpretations in the argument;

7. Questions that ask you to evaluate the strength of the argument;

8. Questions that ask you to determine how additional information would affect the

argument given;

9. Questions that ask you to assess whether the conclusion is consistent with the argument which is made to support it.

THE DIRECTIONS

You should study the directions now, as this will prevent your having to take precious seconds to study them on the day of the test. Instead, you should just quickly skim them during the exam to refresh your memory.

Take a few moments NOW to study the directions.

DIRECTIOS: The questions in this section are based on the reasoning contained in brief statements or passages. For some questions, more than one of the choices, could conceivably answer the question.

However, you are to choose the best answer; that is the response that most accurately and completely answers the question. You should not make assumptions that are by commonsense standards implausible, superfluous, or incompatible with the passage.

After you have chosen the best answer, blacken the corresponding space on your answer sheet.

THE QUESTIONS

LSAT questions do not require you to have any knowledge of the terminology of formal logic. For example, you will not have to identify ‘ad hominem’ arguments (statements which attack a speaker's character or reputation, instead of showing weaknesses in his argument). Nor will you have to understand terms such as ‘syllogism’

or ‘inductive reasoning’.

However, knowing these terms and being able to identify different types of arguments will definitely help you answer the questions within the time limits.

Although no formal knowledge of logic is required, you will need to understand terms such as ‘premise’, ‘argument’, ‘assumption’, ‘inference’ and ‘conclusion. Let's take a brief look at these terms.

LOGICAL REASONING TERMS

An ARGUMENT,in the most precise sense of the word,consists of a premise or premises and a conclusion which is inferred from the premises. A PREMISE is a proposition which is assumed as already proven. For this reason a premise is also an ASSUMPTION. It is the logical starting point of the argument. An INFERENCE is a process of reasoning whereby, starting from one or more premises,you move to a conclusion which follows from the premises. An inference can involve a necessary logical consequence of the premise(s) or a probability derived from the premise(s). The CONCLUSION is the point or idea which is inferred from the argument and which the argument is meant to support. All arguments, then, will consist of premise(s), inference(s), and conclusion. An example of a simple argument is:

Premise: No dogs are amphibians.

Conclusion: No amphibians are dogs.

Most arguments are more complex than this example. Some fill entire books and constitute complete systems of philosophy. Regardless of the length of logical arguments, they may be classified under two general headings: deductive and inductive.

DEDUCTIVE ARGUMENTS

Deductive arguments are those whose premises are intended to provide absolute proof of the conclusion.

EXAMPLE

Major premise: All whales are mammals Minor premise: Orca is a whale.

Conclusion: Orca is a mammal.

In this example,the conclusion follows of necessity from the premises. If all whales are mammals,then any given whale will be a mammal. The example above is also called a SYLLOGISM. A syllogism is a deductive argument with a major premise, a minor premise, and a conclusion.

演繹的論議とは、結論結論結論結論の絶対的な証拠を、前提が提供しようとするものです。

A deductive argument is considered VALID when the inference from the premises is a necessary one. If whales are mammals and Orca is a whale, then Orca must be a mammal.

A deductive argument may be valid,but not true. Such a deductive argument is referred to as an ‘unsound' argument. An unsound argument occurs when one of the premises is false,but the conclusion follows necessarily form the argument.

EXAMPLE

Major premise: All whales are cold-blooded.

Minor premise: Orca is a whale.

Conclusion: Orca is cold-blooded.

(6)

This is a valid argument. If all whales are cold-blooded, and Orca is a whale, then of necessity Orca must be cold-blooded. However, the major premise is false, so the conclusion is not necessarily true (in fact, it is false in this example).

When taking the LSAT it will be important for you to remember the difference between valid and invalid deductive arguments, and sound and unsound deductive arguments. Sometimes you will be given a passage which contains a valid but unsound deductive argument. You will then be asked to choose the answer which contains the same type of argument. Don't waste time forming objections to the arguments. Simply identify the mistake and look for the answer which makes the same type of mistake.

Inductive arguments differ from deductive arguments in that the inference involved in getting from the premises to the conclusion is a probable, not a necessary, one.

Inductive arguments involve an interpretation of some experience or experiences.

Conclusion: The sun will come up every succeeding day of my life. As you can see, the argument is based on experience. The conclusion does not follow with absolute certainty. There may be a time in which the sun will not come up anymore. It may be tomorrow. However, it is very probable that the sun will come up tomorrow and every other day of our lives.

Inductive arguments deal with probabilities. Their conclusions are more or less probable based on the supporting evidence. Inductive arguments are termed stronger or weaker depending on the probability of the conclusion.

Example

Premise: Jill Black has used her electric can opener thousands of times, and it has never malfunctioned.

Conclusion: Therefore, it won't give her any problem with the can she's now opening.

This argument is invalid, since the conclusion does not follow, even if we assume the premise to be true. But notice that,even though the conclusion may be false, it is UNLIKELY that it is false. This is a strong argument because, given that the premise is true; it is unlikely that the conclusion is false.

We could rewrite the passage about Jill Black to produce a weak argument.

EXAMPLE

Jill Black's new can opener didn't give her any problem on the first can, so it will open thousands of cans without malfunctioning.

This argument is weak, because it is dangerous to make such a generalization on the basis of such scant experience.

SUMMARY

1 A valid argument is one in which, given that the premises are true, it is impossible that the conclusion is false.

2. A valid argument in which the premises are true is called a sound argument,

3. A strong argument is one in which,given that the premises are true, the conclusion is unlikely to be false.

4. A weak argument is one in which the premises offer little support for the conclusion.

Look back at the list of operations the logical reasoning test will require you to do.

Number 7 is “evaluate the strength of the argument'" should be clear to you now that this will apply to inductive but not to deductive arguments.

Drill: Logical Reasoning

1. The latest study indicates that women who exercise daily have a higher rate of metabolism than women who do not exercise, lending support to the view that lack of exercise contributes to slow metabolism. The argument would be weakened most by pointing out which of the following.

(A) Statistics can be deceiving.

(B) Many genetic backgrounds were represented in both the exercising and non-exercising groups.

(C) Participants in the study were chosen at random from a larger population.

(D) Some women who did not exercise had higher rates of metabolism than some women who did.

(E) Many variables, such as the ages and diets of participants were not accounted for in the study.

(A)Not all dental patients chew gum.

(B)Dentists should not recommend any brand of gum, since chewing gum may damage expensive dental work.

(C)Some dentists do not recommend Doubledent for their patients who chew gum.

(D)The phrase “more dentists recommend Doubledent for their patients who chew gum” is too ambiguous to provide support for the author’s conclusion.
