Message for the International Conference

The Relationship between Vietnam, Indochina and Japan during World War II

Toshiki Ando

Director, The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I would like to express my gratitude to the host of this inter- national conference, University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi, and the school personnel including President Nguyễn Văn Khánh, as well as the school personnel of the Graduate School of the Asia-Pacific Studies, Waseda University, including Mr. Masaya Shiraishi. I also would like to extend my greetings to all the scholars and researchers from Japan, Vietnam, and various countries in Asia and Europe, including Mr. Kenʼichiro Hirano of Toyo Bunko and all the guests including Minister Jun Yanagi of the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam. I am Toshiki Ando, representing The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam.

As the President of the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, I am very glad that the international conference The Relationship between Vietnam, Indochina and Japan during World War II is being held today and tomorrow here at University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi, on the 70th anniversary of the end of the war and the 70th anniversary of the founding of the state of Vietnam.

Needless to say, the exchange between Vietnam and Japan is being expanded with Vietnamʼs eco- nomic development and advancement in the international society, and the range of bilateral relations has become broader and wider. To mention just a few examples, an increasing number of Japanese companies have been operating in Vietnam in recent years, and the number of Vietnamese students who study in Japan is also on the rise. Indeed, we are witnessing the expansion of material and service circulation and human interaction both qualitatively and quantitatively. With these facts in mind, we need to increase and deepen the quality of such exchanges. This will no doubt contribute to deepen the mutual understanding of each otherʼs history and culture.

To that end, I believe this international conference is highly meaningful. It is significant that scholars and researchers who have considerable achievements have gathered together to review the relations between Japan, Vietnam and Indochina as history and disclose the new findings from the research re- sults. Additionally, it is notable that the research and discussion are carried out as a collaborative work joined by scholars and researchers from Japan, Vietnam, and various countries in Asia and Europe. In that sense, this conference sets a model for intellectual exchange.
