概要 「ピクチャレスク」（“picturesque”）の概念は１８世紀から１９世紀のイギリスにおいて 頻繁に用いられた美学上の概念である。ウィリアム・ギルピン（１７２４１８０４）はこの概念を 理論的に考察し，またその理論に基づいて自然風景・庭園風景・版画・絵画などを評論した。 ギルピンを研究する上で，ギルピンの経歴と著作，そして「ピクチャレスク紀行」と呼ばれ る数回の旅行を年代順に整理しておくことは重要である。本資料はギルピンに関する研究の 補助資料として作成されたものである。 キーワード ウィリアム・ギルピン，ピクチャレスク，ピクチャレスク紀行 原稿受理日 ２０１８年１０月１日Abstract The word, picturesque, was frequently used in the UK from the １８th century to the １９th century. William Gilpin（１７２４１８０４）is one of the most notable figures who theorized the idea aesthetically and applied the theory to his practical reviews of natural scenery, gardens, prints, and other similar matters. In studying Gilpin, it is useful to keep track of his career and writings, especially by relating his picturesque tours to his writings. This paper was intended as one of the useful supplementary materials for the study of William Gilpin and the idea of picturesque .
１．は じ め に
ウィリアム・ギルピン（William Gilpin, １７２４１８０４）は，１８世紀半ばから１９世紀初頭に かけて，「ピクチャレスク」（picturesque）の概念を基礎とした美学理論を提唱し，また その理論に基づく自然風景や庭園風景の実践的評論を行った。「ピクチャレスク」の概念 は文字どおり「ピクチャー」（picture）と関連しており，自然風景や庭園風景を「ピクチャ レスク」であると言う場合，文字どおりそこには「絵画的」という含意がある。そしてそ の場合の「絵画」とは，１８世紀のイギリスで人気の高かった１７世紀のイタリアやフランス の画家たち，すなわち，クロード・ロラン（Claude Lorraine, １６００８２），サルヴァトー ル・ローザ（Salvator Rosa, １６１５７３），ガスパール・デュゲ（Gaspard Dughet, １６１５ ７５）らの描いた風景画が念頭に置かれていた。したがって，「ピクチャレスク」の概念に 基づく自然風景や庭園風景の観賞態度を端的に定義するならば，「１７世紀イタリアやフラ ンスの風景画家たちの描いた風景画を基準として，自然風景や庭園風景を観賞する態度」 と言うことになる。これはもちろん，「ピクチャレスク」という言葉の元々の語義にもと づいた最も単純な定義であり，１８世紀から１９世紀にかけて「ピクチャレスク」という言葉 の用法は複雑に変化していく。しかし，どのように語義が変化していったとしても，「ピ クチャレスク」（picturesque）という言葉の中に含まれている「ピクチャー」（picture） という要素，すなわち「絵画的」という意味は，この概念の表す最も重要な特質であり続 けるはずである。 筆者は１８世紀から１９世紀にかけてイギリスで用いられた「ピクチャレスク」の概念につ いて，１８世紀半ばから１９世紀初頭にかけて文筆家として活躍したウィリアム・ギルピンを 中心に調査を行っている。ギルピンは英国国教会の牧師・教育者としての職に従事すると 同時に，「ピクチャレスク」の概念を風景鑑賞・庭園鑑賞の理論の基礎として位置づけ， またその理論にもとづいてイギリス各地の風景を実践的に評論し，その著作は同時代およ び後世の人々に大きな影響を与えた。 本研究ノートでは，ウィリアム・ギルピンを研究する上で基礎的な資料となる，略歴年 表，すべての著作物年表，ピクチャレスク関連の著作物年表をまとめた。これらの情報を まとめる上で底本として利用したのは，William D. Templeman による１９３９年の著作，The Life and Work of William Gilpin（17241804）, Master of the Picturesque and Vicar of Boldre である。
