：もともと顔かお文字も じはアメリカで1980年代ねんだいに生うまれたといわれてるよ。英えい語ごで使つかうアルファベットは1バイト* 文 も 字 じ だけど日 に 本 ほん 語 ご は2バイト文 も 字 じ を使 つか うので、アルファベットより、使 つか える記 き 号 ごう が多 おお いんだ。それで文 も 字 じ や記 き 号 ごう をいろいろ組くみ合あわせて、どんどん顔かお文字も じの種しゅ類るいが多おおくなったんだよ。No. Kao-moji are said to have originated in the United States during the 1980s. While alphanumeric characters used in English are one byte each, Japanese characters are double byte. A PC that supports the Japanese language handles alphanumeric characters and symbols, as well as double-byte Japanese characters. This allows the user to constantly invent a new Kao-moji.
*バイト(byte): コンピューターが扱あつかうデータ量りょうを表あらわす単たん位い。半角はんかく文字も じのアルファベットやカタカナ1文字も じ分ぶんは1バイト、全角ぜんかく 文字も じの漢かん字じやひらがな1文字も じ分ぶんは2バイト。
Byte: a unit for measuring the amount of information a computer can store or use. One alphabet or Katakana uses 1 byte, and one Kanji or Hiragana uses 2 bytes.

コンとか呼よばれているんだけど、顔かおがこんなふうに横よこに寝ねているんだよ。

When Should We Use Kao-moji ?
友 とも だち同 どう 士 し や家 か 族 ぞく とのメールに使 つか う人 ひと が多 おお いよ。仲 なか のいい友ともだちからのメールが文も字じで書かいた文章ぶんしょうだけ だと、事 じ 務 む 的 てき で冷 つめ たい感 かん じがするという人 ひと もいるね。 顔 かお 文も字じの入はいったメールは、文も字じだけでは伝つたえられな い気 き 持 も ちを伝 つた えることができるから便 べん 利 り だし、も らった人ひとも楽たのしい気き持もちになるね。でも、顔かお文も字じは ふざけている、と受うけ取とる人ひともいるから、仕し事ごとの連れん 絡 らく メールには普ふ通つう使つかわないよ。
Many people use Kao-moji when they send e-mails to friends and family. Some people think a message from a close friend that doesn’t include any Kao-moji is impersonal and cold. Kao-moji are a convenient way of conveying feelings that would not come across with words alone. It is also fun to receive a mail with a lot of Kao-moji. However, Kao-moji are not usually considered appropriate for business correspondences.
