Q U A R T E R D E C K

WE ARE ON THE WEB

T H I S IS THE FINAL issue for 1995. Although we had hoped to publish four issues this year, it d i d n ' t happen. The reason is our lack of unsolicited submissions. To remedy this, we are going to be soliciting more dedicated issues. If you are interested in orga- nizing a special issue, contact the editors. Note that we seek summaries that c o n v e y new concepts and ideas to our professional colleagues.

With this issue, you see a second regular column (the first being Toolkit), Ocean Ed- ucation, managed by Dr. John Farrington. Consistent with its title, the focus will be ed- ucation at all levels. A third column titled International Issues will debut in Vol. 9, No.

1. International Issues is managed by Dr. Anne Arquit Niederberger.

As promised in a previous Q U A R T E R D E C K , we now have information about com- ing issues on the World Wide Web (WWW). This is a bit dangerous because you will now see the inner workings of our p u b l i c a t i o n - - y o u can now see the sausage being made! I hope that getting on-line serves two purposes. The first is to let you see the fu- ture and participate in it. On the Web, you can just click our mail address and send mail to us with your idea, proposal, or comment. By seeing the future, more members may be stimulated to submit material. The second reason is educational. Issues don't just happen.

Plans change. Time sensitive issues appear and must be accommodated. Promised arti- cles don't appear. Space appears or disappears at the last minute of production (we work in 16-page signatures). Check the W W W and you'll be the first to know.

E-mail Directory

The TOS W W W site has an e-mail directory. Check to see that your address is correct and use the add/correct feature if necessary. Since we believe this is the only e-mail directory for oceanographers worldwide, please get your colleagues to sign up. Our web site is at http://www.tos.org. To make easy use of the e-mail di- rectory set up a command line or alias on your system similar to this:

netscape http://www.tos.org/tos_email_list.html

TOS News System

With the demise o f O M N E T , TOS attempted to create a r e p l a c e m e n t s y s t e m using the W W W . While it is not a r e p l a c e m e n t for the O M N E T system, it is worth giving a try. Go to the TOS web site and check it. We solicit ideas on how to improve the system within the limits of HTML.
