Introduction
This section relates to the March 2016 workshop held at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. The workshop was based on the research project, ‘Boundary Demarcation and Local Politics in Modern and Contemporary Alpine-Adriatic Borderlands’, which began in 2015 and will continue to 2018, supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number JP15H03255. The project explores the experiences, identity-conflicts, and memories of peoples in the Alpine-Adriatic borderlands (now known as regions in Italy, Slovenia, and Austria) through its history of shifting borders, changing politics, and war from the late 19th century to present day. The papers published here were presented at the workshop and were modified to incorporate comments from the attendees.
I am grateful to Professor Pieter M. Judson, Professor Lucy Riall, Professor Pavel Kolář, and Professor Borut Klabjan of the EUI. They participated in the workshop and kindly gave us input and advice that has been invaluable in developing our research. I would like to especially thank Professor Judson who commented on our papers despite being extremely busy.

本小特集は、共同研究「近現代アルペン−アドリア・ボーダーランドにおける国境編成と住民論理のポリ ティクス」（科研基盤(B) 15H03255、2015～2018年度）の一環として、2016年3月、欧州大学院（イタリア・
フィレンツェ）で開催したワークショップの報告である。この共同研究は、19世紀から20 世紀にかけての アルペン−アドリア地域（現イタリア、スロヴェニア、オーストリア国境地域）における、戦争等にともな い揺れ動いた国境編成と、そのもとでの地域住民の経験と記憶、アイデンティティをめぐるさまざまな論理 を検討し、横断的な歴史叙述の可能性を追究することを目的としている。ここに掲載した論考は、ワークシ ョップでの報告を、参加者のコメントを受けて加筆したものである。
ワークショップの開催にあたっては、欧州大学院歴史・文明学部から支援を受け、ピーター・ジャドソン 教授（ハプスブルク史）、ルーシー・ライオル教授（イタリア近現代史、グローバル・ヒストリー）、パヴェ ル・コラーシ教授（旧共産主義諸国史）、ボルート・クラビヤン教授（トリエステ近現代史）から貴重なコメ ントをいただいた。とりわけジャドソン教授は本小特集のためにコメントを執筆してくださった。記して感 謝する。
