先日，筆者が所属している徳島大学薬学部の薬学科6 年 次卒業研究発表会が無事終了した。新型コロナウイルス （COVID-19）の感染者数が増大し，第三波が到来したと言 われるこの時期（2020 年 11 月末）に，対面形式で卒研発表 会が実施できたことを嬉しく思う。コロナ禍により，2020 年に予定されていた学会発表の多くは，国内外を問わず中 止あるいは誌上／Web 開催となった。そのため，筆者が研 究指導する卒論生にとって，先の卒研発表会が自身の研究 成果を対面形式で発表できた唯一の場であった。学外で研 究成果を発表する機会が得られなかった卒論生の思いはさ まざまであると思われるが，筆者としては，大変残念で心 苦しい結果であった。 学生の学会発表は，研究の進捗を加速させるだけでなく， 学生自身をも成長させる。講演要旨を作成する頃から発表 を終えるまでの間，学生は積極的に実験を進めるだけでな く，自身の研究をより深く理解し，かつ聴衆に理解しても らえるようにと努力する。筆者としては，普段からもっと 研究と向き合って欲しいと思うのだが，これは試験直前に ならないと勉強しないのと同じで仕方がない（?）気もする。 また，筆者が研究指導している学生には，学会参加後に報 告書を提出してもらっている。学生自身の発表に関する質 疑・応答を振り返ることが主な報告内容であるが，他所属 の同世代の発表者と接することでモチベーションが上がっ たと報告してくる学生も少なくない。いずれにせよ，学外 での成果発表を通じて，学生が研究者として，そしてヒト として大きく成長していくことは言を俟たない。 さて，FIA 研究懇談会では，毎年晩秋に，流れを利用する 分析法とその応用に関する研究発表会，すなわちFIA 講演 会を開催している。ここで筆者は，FIA 講演会を学生の研 究成果発表の場として強くお勧めする。FIA 講演会は全て の参加者を温かく受け入れてくれる雰囲気がある。FIA 研 究懇談会委員長を始めとする“学生・若手研究者を元気づ け，やる気を引き出すことに長けた”諸先輩方が数多く参 加されており，FIA 研究懇談会の最大の魅力である“ひと” が凝縮された集会と言える。また，国際会議デビューには International Conference on Flow Injection Analysis（ICFIA）が お勧めである。その魅力は一言では伝えきれない。是非と も実際に参加して体験していただきたい。2021 年こそは，学生にFIA 講演会と ICFIA での発表の機会を提供してあげ
たいと心から思う。
The thesis Research Presentation of the graduating students at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Tokushima University was successfully finished a few days ago. It was a pleasure to have been able to hold an in-person presentation meeting at such time as the number of COVID-19 cases is increasing and the third wave is said to have arrived. Because of the corona disaster, many of the presentations scheduled for 2020 have been canceled or held in journals or on the web. Therefore, the aforementioned presentation meeting was the only opportunity for my students to present their research results in a face-to-face manner. The feeling of these students who have missed the opportunity to present their research results outside of the university may vary, but this was a dissatisfying and unfortunate result for me.
Preparing a presentation for an academic meeting would encourage students to accelerate their research progress and promote personal growth. From the time of writing the abstract to finishing the presentation, the students would actively work on their experiments while striving for a deeper understanding of their research and making it understandable to the audience. I wish my students to be more involved in their research regularly, but it seems to be the same as not studying until just before the exam, does it? I usually ask my students to submit a report after participating in an academic meeting. Although most of the reports reflect on their presentations' questions and answers, many students are reporting that they got motivated by knowing other presenters of the same generation. In any case, students would grow up as a researcher and as a person through their presentation at an academic conference.
Every year, the Japanese Association for Flow Injection Analysis (JAFIA) holds the FIA Conference. Here, I strongly recommend the FIA Conference as a great opportunity for students to present their research results because it has a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all participants. Chairperson of the JAFIA and other members who excel in inspiring and motivating students and young researchers are participating, and the “People” which is the most attractive feature of the JAFIA are concentrated in this meeting. I also recommend the ICFIA for students’ international conference debut. The appeal of ICFIA cannot be conveyed in a few words, so I urge students to participate and experience it by themselves. I sincerely hope to provide my students with the opportunity to present at the FIA Conference and ICFIA in 2021.
