World Wide Web Resources for Communication

Kenji K

ITAO

Introduction

The Internet has expanded greatly over the past several years, and resources on it have increased almost immeasurably. It is used by scholars and researchers all over the world. It is the largest library or resource bank in the world. It has a great many resources related to communication.

The most common form of resources on the Internet is web pages on the World Wide Web. Technically, it is very easy to access to web resources if you have a computer connected to the Internet. You do not need a complicated knowledge of commands. All you need to do is to “point and click” using a mouse, and you can move from one page to another. Many web pages have connections to other web pages, so you can see other web pages related to the one you are looking at just by clicking on a title or picture. In addition, there are many search engines, search directories and search sites, and you can use them to search for information. You can find a great deal of information this way. However, while web pages are technically easy to use, the Internet is very large and it has no central organization, so finding precisely the information you want can be very difficult.

It is easy for individuals to make their own simple web pages and put them on line. With more and more servers connected to the Internet, it is very easy to upload web pages on the Internet, even for children or students.

There are therefore countless web pages on the Internet, some valuable and some useless. With this expansion of the Internet, it is becoming more and more difficult to find the web pages you really want.

There are a great many communication scholars and professional organizations who have developed web resources related their organizations, conferences, publications, classes, and fields of interest.

Professional people have gathered resources and made them available on line.

There are many university communication departments, particularly in the United States, and programs which have the name of “communication”

in Japan.

Since communication is such a vast field, there are many publications, including journals and newsletters. Some organizations have made web pages for their publications. Some of these web pages just include information about the journal or newsletter, some have calls for papers or tables of contents, and some contain issues of the publication that can be read on line.

Because of the difficulty of finding information on the World Wide Web, I have made web pages to help people who are interested in communication to find useful resources for their professional development and to improve their teaching and research. In this paper, I will explain the background of the development of this resource, what it covers, what it can be used for, and how to use it effectively.

There are two main pages which have links to the web pages with useful resources related to communication. One has links to resources in English and the other, to those in Japanese. Some of the Japanese pages also have English. The links are kept separate mainly because you need a browser which can process Japanese characters to read the Japanese links. Since the latter has some mixed information in Japanese and English, it might have useful information even for users who do not read Japanese, if they have a

308

(4)

browser that can handle Japanese characters.

The English resource is “Communication” (http://ilc2.doshisha.ac.jp/

users/kkitao/online/www/communi.htm). I have categorized and subcategorized a large number of resources and put descriptions for many of them. The information preceded by ** is a description written by me.

Descriptions without ** come from the pages themselves. I have used the original tiles of the web pages as much as possible.

“Communication gaku no shiryo (Resources in the Study of Communication)” (http://ilc2.doshisha.ac.jp/users/kkitao/japanese/

online/comm/) is the Japanese links page. I have included whichever web resources have Japanese characters on this page.

I will explain these two web pages in this paper.

Using “Communication”

Introduction

The field of communication is often misunderstood. Some people think that it is limited to language education, oral or written English, speech communication, rhetoric, or debate. Communication is, in fact, a very broad field that includes all aspects of human communication, including the study of language and culture, and which overlaps with linguistics, particularly pragmatics.

However, there are a number of fields of study in or related to communication, including advertising, business communication, health communication, intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, mass communication, nonverbal communication, organizational communication, public relations, public speaking, rhetoric, speech communication, etc.

I developed this resource web page because I am interested in

309

(5)

interpersonal, intercultural, and nonverbal communication. Thus, this page is for people who are interested in the field of communication, particularly communication as social science.

Since there are some areas of communication that I am not familiar with, such as telecommunication, journalism, health communication, and political communication, I have not included much information about them. I have included information about general communication, especially intercultural communication.

Organization of “Communication”

This web page has nine sections: organizations, conferences, journals and newsletters, links to useful information, areas in communication, mailing lists, communication programs, publishers and bookstores, and people.

Since this resource is updated only once a year, I add new links on another page, and you can see such new items by clicking “more items.”

“Organizations” mainly includes international associations, American associations, and associations in other countries concerned with communication in general and specialized areas of communication. I put a subsection of lists of links to various organizations first, and then links to individual organizations; first, international and American ones including NCA and ICA, and then organizations in other countries. For most individual communication organizations, I included a brief description of the organization and its purpose, mainly descriptions provided by the organizations themselves.

The web pages of organizations can be very useful, since many of them have information about their conferences, publications, and other activities they host, as well as many useful links related to their fields.

“Conferences” includes major conferences such as ICA and NCA. As mentioned above, association web pages generally have information about their conferences. Most of them have one major annual conference.

310

(6)

“Journals and Newsletters” has links to journals published by professional associations and other organizations. Some web pages have the articles themselves, some have the table of contents, and some have information on submissions or subscriptions or other information.

“Links to Useful Information” includes various types of useful information related to any part of the field of communication. These are resources which might be useful for people who are interested in communication. They are general resources or related to research in communication, and they are broader than any one field of communication.

(Resources related to specific fields of communication are linked in the next section.) They are not classified further.

“Areas of Communication” includes fields such as advertising, business communication, debate, health communication, intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, mass communication, nonverbal communication, organizational communication, public relations, public speaking, rhetoric, and speech communication. I have listed only the areas I am interested in and/or think are important.

I have listed the mailing lists which I found in “Mailing Lists.” I am not particularly familiar with any of those lists. Some are active, and some are not.

“Communication Programs” lists departments of communication in universities. Many of them are departments in the American universities, but some are in other countries. They have information about communication classes, faculty members, admission policies, etc. Some of them have good links pages to resources related to communication. There are subsections for lists of links and individual programs or departments.

I have included publishers and bookstores that handle many books on communication. They are very useful for searching for information in any field of communication. Some publishers have started on-line support services for their basic course textbooks on human communication or

311

(7)

interpersonal communication, with syllabuses, lecture notes, PowerPoint presentations, handouts, tests, etc. It is worth investigating good textbooks as well as academic books.

“People” includes web pages made by people who are teaching communication or who are interested in communication. Some of them have useful resources for certain areas of communication, in addition to class materials, syllabuses, etc.

I do not have a section on research methods, but I am planning to add more information on research, since it is a very important area. You may find some useful pages in the section, “Links to Useful Information”.

Communication is such a broad area that it is difficult to decide how much to include. I have included links directly related to communication studies. Highly specialized or tangential fields may not be included.

Using “Communication” Effectively

Since August 1996, when I originally constructed and updated this web resource at Lancaster University in England, much more information on communication-related topics has become available. In particular, many more organizations have put much more information on web pages.

“Organizations” and “Links to Useful Information” have very useful information. The American Communication Association and Southern States Communication Association (SSCA) home pages have particularly useful resources. I strongly suggest that you investigate those sites thoroughly. If you are living in Japan and interested in intercultural communication, SIETAR-Japan seems to be very active.

I have started to construct the World Communication Association (WCA) web site. You can read it to find out what previous conferences were like, what articles were published, and what is going on now. Now it has a copy of the newsletter and the conference information, as well as titles of articles of journal back issues.

312

(8)

CIOS (Communication Institute for Online Scholarship) provides many resources, but many of them are only for members. If you want to use some of their resources frequently, you might consider becoming a member.

The information about conferences is not exhaustive. If there is a conference you cannot find here but know which association is hosting it, try that association’s web page.

I listed communication programs in the United States. They are useful if you are considering working for a higher degree or doing research. There is also recently added information about communication programs in Canada, the UK, and other countries.

I listed some journals in communication. For the most part, the only information you can obtain about journals is information about submitting papers and subscribing. You can read some newsletters on line. I listed resources for some divisions of communication. If you are interested in any of those areas, you might find something useful.

As for mailing lists, COMSERVE has some mailing lists. If you want to use many of their mailing lists, you need to become a member. In addition, XCULT is a very active mailing list related to cross-cultural communication. I have not tried many others yet. Now some organizations have mailing lists, and you can subscribe to them even if you are not a member.

There are some useful publishers' home pages. If you have any questions, you can get response through their e-mail easily.

As mentioned above, I am planning to gather more information on research in the near future.

Conclusion

I hope these resources will be useful for your studies and research. Some of the resources related to research and writing might be useful even for people outside of the field of communication.

“Communication gaku no shiryo (Resources in the study of Communication)”

I have made this web page in order to include communication resources which have Japanese characters. It has six sections: professional organizations, journals, resources, bibliographies, departments and faculties which have communication as a part of the name, and communication education.

The professional organizations section includes a link page for various organizations and the Intercultural Education Society, Japan, Japan Debate Association (JDA), The International Performance Research Association (IPRA), The Japanese Association for Semiotic Studies (English page:

http://www.tara.tsukuba.ac.jp/semiotic/semiotic-index-e.html), Communication Association of Japan (CAJ), The Japanese Association for Studies in English Communication (JASEC) (English: http://www.

waseda.ac.jp/JASEC/index-e.htm), and Total Communication Study Group.

Some organizations have some information in English.

“Journals” includes tables of contents of more than ten journals. Some of them include English articles, and it might be worth looking for articles even if you do not have a browser that can handle Japanese.

“Resources” includes a page with a list of scholars in communication.

“Bibliography” has extensive bibliographies on politeness, nonverbal communication, intercultural communication, and culture and education.

All information is in English.

“Departments and Faculties” has some links and individual institutions which have a program with “communication” as a part of its name. There are quite large number of institutions. However, most of these programs are not communication studies programs. They emphasize English language,

314

(10)

particularly oral and written communication. That is the reason why they are called “communication.”

“Education” includes Shimada’s resources, which are very useful for teaching and research. It has also a list of books on intercultural communication. Some of those books have brief descriptions.

Conclusion

I have described and explained two extensive web page resources which have a vast number of links. We hope that these resources are useful for many teachers and researchers in the field of communication.

Notes

This work was funded by Doshisha University’s Research Promotion Fund, 2000- 2001, and a Grant-in-Aid for Exploratory Research, 1999-2001, from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

This web resource was initiated in 1996 at Lancaster University, and it has been updated several times since then. I completely renewed this web page in April 2001. I would like to express my deep appreciation to S. Kathleen Kitao, who has helped in creating this resource and in updating it.

The mission of the ESU is to promote international understanding and human achievement through the English language. We achieve our aims through scholarships, awards, debating and public speaking events and a variety of educational programmes for young people from all over the world. School children, students and young professionals are targeted because the future of international relations will be in their hands. They share a common language in English through which they are able to share thoughts and 319

(15)

feelings, to transmit information, to explain, discuss, argue and persuade. The young people who take part in our programmes emerge better equipped to contribute to their society and with a better understanding of the world they live in. The linchpin of this activity is the international headquarters at Dartmouth House which not only manages the international programmes but also provides advice and support for national ESU programmes. It also is responsible for the extraordinary international growth of the ESU which now embraces 47 countries on all five continents. Thousands of ESU members in the UK and all over the world are able to share their ideas and culture through the ESU global network and regard Dartmouth House as their base.

The ESU was launched on 28 June 1918 on the initiative of journalist, Evelyn Wrench together with sixteen friends, with the aim of promoting closer ties between English speaking peoples. The first public meeting was addressed by former Prime Minister, A J Balfour and Dartmouth House itself was opened in 1927 by Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin. Since then, with the support and guidance of many distinguished public figures, the ESU has adapted and grown to meet the needs of a changing world. In a refurbished Dartmouth House, we are well placed to meet the challenges of the new century.

CIOS (Communication Institute for Online Scholarship)

Whitepages now provides information on 4,000 communication scholars/students; hot links allow you to auto-send email to listed individuals; other hot links allow auto search for background information on individuals (publications, e-conference contributions, etc.). Try it:

http://www.cios.org/www/wp2.htm

CIOS WWW System Supports New Whitepages Directory

The inauguration of the new world wide web interface to CIOS/Comserve services made it possible to significantly enhance the whitepages service –– the online directory of communication scholars and students. It is now considerably more interactive and provides access to a very large database of communication scholars.

The new CIOS whitepages database contains information on more than 4,000 scholars and students. You can search the database for any text string: names, professional interests, email addresses, etc. The search system supports wildcard searching, proximity searching, and full Boolean search logic. The best feature however is that the displayed search results are interactive. If a located entry contains an email address, it will be displayed by your browser as a selectable hot link. Simply click on it and your browser will allow you to send mail to that address.

All last names in entries are also displayed as selectable hot links. Click on a last name and you’ll be able to search other CIOS databases to obtain background information on that individual including their record of publications and hotline conference messages that contain the person’s name, perhaps from a discussion in which he/she participated or a discussion in which people mentioned his/her work.

The new system can function as an interactive directory to the field and as a front end to other CIOS databases. Preparing to visit a communication department to give a talk or interview for a job? Selecting a Masters or Ph.D. program? Search by geographic location (e.g., “Salt Lake City”) and you can locate most of the communication scholars who live there. Click on a scholar's last name and quickly pull up his/her publication record.

With the new whitepages system, the CIOS is withdrawing support for the long-standing 330

(26)

email based system provided within the Comserve email interface since 1986. The new whitepages system is available now and will remain available to the general public until the start of the 1996-1997 academic year when it will become restricted to CIOS members and those from CIOS affiliate institutions.

Society for Cross-Cultural Research

SCCR is an organization of about 200 members devoted to pursuing cross-cultural research from a multidisciplinary perspective. The Society includes Psychologists, Anthropologists, Sociologists, other social scientists, and members of other disciplines such as Communications, Business, and Education. SCCR was founded by George 340

(36)

Murdock and others in 1971 when he was head of the Cross-Cultural Cumulative Coding Center at the University of Pittsburgh. Ronald Rhoner, also instrumental in the decision to found the Society, organized the first meeting in 1972 and drafted the constitution and by-laws. The Society is committedly multidisciplinary, and its Presidency rotates among Anthropologists, Psychologists, and other social scientists. Whereas early members were heavily involved in hologeistic research, often in conjunction with the Human Relations Area Files (HRAF), the methodological perspectives of the membership have broadened over the years to include a wide range of cross-cultural interests and approaches.
