Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the lipids level and their relation to the Body Mass Index (BMI). Dyslipidemia and obesity are primary risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The study sample was 120 students aged 12-15 years. To assess the levels of cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C and triglycerides, blood volume of 10 ml, was taken from each student, after 12-hour fast and analyzed in Automatic Biochemical Analyzer (OLYMPUS AU-560). Also body mass index was computed. To investigate the differences in lipid levels because of body mass index, age and gender, one-way Anova (ANOVA) test was used and multiple comparisons Scheffe post-hoc. Results revealed that there were no differences in lipid concentration in relation to age and gender. Also results revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in triglyceride levels of the examined individuals belonging to different categories of body mass index (normal, overweight, obese), F(2,117)=18,01, p <0,00 and levels of HDL -C F(2,117)=4,53 p <0,013. In conclusion, the risk for future heart disease than elevated levels of lipids, a process that may begin in childhood, may be reduced by lowering the weight.
