Women at activist associations painted hundreds of black crosses on a pink background on lampposts throughout the city, to remind the public of the unsolved murders in Juárez. 活動家団体の女性たちによって描かれたピンク地に黒色の十字架。 彼女たちは、女性や少女たちが多数犠牲となったフアレスでの未解 決殺人事件を一般の人々に伝えるため、町中の電柱に何百もの十字 架を描いている。

At the so-called Campo Algodonero or "cotton field,"where in 2001, the bodies of 8 women were found. These crosses were placed at the site by the mothers of slain women. Today, the case remains unsolved.
2001年に8人の遺体が発見された通称「カンポ・アルゴド ネロ（コットン・フィールドの意）」と呼ばれる場所。これらの 十字架は、娘を殺害された母親たちによって立てられたもの だ。事件は現在も未解決のままである。
There is a saying in the area that, if you want to find Juárez, located just across the border from El Paso, Texas, just follow the crosses. I made several trips to the troubled Mexican border town Juárez, to document a ghastly legacy—the murders of hundreds of women over the past decade.
“Once you get into the grips of the Mexican authorities it’s a black hole, and you can simply disappear. You just want to be invisible. You can't trust anyone in this city. Every journalist who ever does this story eventually becomes paranoid. Every person on the street becomes suspicious.”
Most Americans are unaware that this city has been the center of an epidemic of horrific crimes against women and girls. Since 1993, more than 500 young women, many of them workers at U.S. and foreign assembly plants, have been murdered in this tough Mexican-border factory city. Hundreds more women have disappeared. Most of them fit a similar profilex—young women who came from
other parts of the country to work in the maquiladoras, the factories on the border that take advantage of Mexico's cheap labor to produce goods for U.S. and international companies.
Many of the women disappeared on their way to or from work, perhaps while waiting for the buses that take them between the maquiladoras and the shantytowns on the outskirts of town in the late-night or predawn hours. The victims are kidnapped, raped, and mutilated before being killed, their bodies then dumped in the dusty fields in the surrounding desert areas of the city.
Government records list many of the women as victims of unknown assailants, and many of the victims themselves are unidentified. For years, the mothers of these women felt like they were alone in the world. When they would report women as disappeared, the police would suggest the women were out with boyfriends until they turned up in shallow graves, often raped and mutilated.

Rosa Gallegos, a dressmaker, holds a photograph of her daughter Rosio who, at the age of 19, was last seen September 19, 1998, in a police car in front of their home. Her body was found 3 days later. Ironically, her accused murderer, Police Officer Pedro Valles Chairez, worked in a special unit on crimes against women. According to the mother, the officer had a romantic interest in Rosio, which was not reciprocated.
娘ロシオの写真を手にする仕立屋のローサ・ガレゴス。 1998年9月19日、当時19歳だったロシオは、自宅前で 警察の車に乗っているところを目撃されたのを最後に消 息を絶った。その3日後、彼女は遺体となって発見され た。皮肉にも、殺人の容疑で起訴された警察官ペドロ・ ヴァレス・チャイレスは、女性に対する犯罪を取り締まる 特別捜査班に所属していた。母親によると、この警察官 は彼女の娘に一方的な恋愛感情を抱いていたという。
Marta Ledezma and her husband Umberto hold a photograph of their daughter Angelica, who, at the age of 15, was last seen April 20, 1995. Her body was found on April 20, murdered by an unknown assailant. She was on her way to look for work in the maquiladoras when she was abducted.
娘アンジェリカの写真を見つめるマルタ・レデスマと夫ウ ンベルト。1995年4月20日、当時15歳だったアンジェリ カは行方不明となり、同日に何者かによって殺害された 彼女の遺体が発見された。拉致された時、彼女はマキラ ドーラ（組立工場）に仕事を探しに行く途中だった。
Irma Monreal holds a portrait of her daughter Esmeralda, who, at the age of 14, was last seen October 29, 2001. Her body was found 8 days later on November 6, 2001. Her bruised and mutilated body was dumped in a dusty lot called Campo Algodonero, in a commercial area of Juárez, murdered by an unknown assailant. According to her mother, her hair was cut off and the skin on her face was ripped off. The bodies of 7 other girls were found in the same lot within a 3 day period.
娘エスメラルダの肖像画を抱くイルマ・モンレアル。エス メラルダ（当時14歳）は、2001年10月29日を最後に姿 が見えなくなった。その8日後の11月6日、何者かに襲わ れて殺害された彼女は、フアレスの商業地帯にあるカン ポ・アルゴドネロの一画で、バラバラの遺体となって遺棄 されているのを発見された。母親によると、彼女の髪の毛 は切り落とされ、顔面の皮膚は剥ぎ取られていたという。 発見からの3日間で、同じ敷地内から別に7体の少女の 遺体が発見された。
Rubi Pando, the mother of Airis Estrella Enriquez, sits on a bed besides a small shrine in honor of her slain daughter. In 2005 when Airis was 7 years old, she was raped multiple times and murdered by as many as 4 men.
