*【 Abstract 】
This paper examines the efficiency of various environmental managements both related to system and structure and related to specific pollutants for Japanese firms of the manufacturing and construction industry. The results showed that setting up the department and staff responsible for environmental issues and adopting environmental training systems was the most efficient in terms of environmental management. It was also found that certification of ISO 14001 and disclosure of environmental statements which will be directly related to international transaction or corporate image were also the efficient in conducting the environmental management. CO
2emission management which is related to long term and indirect environmental management was the least efficient. The trend was the same for both dirty and non-dirty industries. Determinants of the efficiency of environmental management were also examined. The results indicated that trade and FDI had a positive and significant impact on the efficiency of environmental management. This will suggest that globalization of firms is an important factor for the improvement of the efficiency of environmental management and also to increase international competition and monitoring will be a good factor for the efficiency of environmental management.
