lntroduction

It

is

well-known

that

the

Cakrasarpvara-traditon,

one of

the

biggest

movements of

Buddhist

Tantnsm

in

early medieval

India,

produced

many canons(tantras) which

identify

themselves

as

the

Ybginitantra.

Inspite

of

their

importance

fbr

reconstmcting

the

history

of

Buddhist

Tantrism,

most of

them

have

not

been

researched enough and remain unpublishedi.

The

Vojradahamaha-tantrandy'a

(VI))

is

one of such

texts.

It

is

a very

big

text

which

includes

much

interesting

information

on

the

CUkrasamvara-system,

This

paper

aims at

presenting

a

critical

Sanskrit

text

of chapter.1 and

42

of

this

vantra

with supplementary notes which

indicate

some related sentences

in

other

texts,2

The

present

author

has

a

plan

to

publish

chapters ef

the

tantra

continuously.

Chapter.

1

can

be

considered

as

the

most

important

one

to

know

the

basic

attitude of

both

philosophy

and

practice.

Chapter.

42

is

a

self-commentary

on

chapter.

1

, whose

mterpretatien

depends

on

the

intemal(adhyafitma)

theory.

These

twe

chapters,

the

present

author

believes,

can

be

an

entrance

to

understand

the

Tantric

world of

VD.

This

is

the

.

son why

these

two

are chosen

and

edited

here.

The

existance of

two

manuscripts of

VD

is

reported

(=Culcatta

Sastri72,3/Tekyo

Matsunami

343.).

Both

of

them

are

palm-leaf

manuscripts and appear

to

be

old,

There,

however,

are

lines

or

passages

with

doubtfu1

and

difficult

reading

in

both.

The

Tibetan

translation

of

VI)

is

not always

helpfu1

because

its

reading

is

sometimes

different

from

those

of

Sanslcrit

manuscripts.

Commentaries

are not completely useful since only

Tibetan

texts

are available and commentators often skip sentences.

Therefore,

this

editon relies on

the

fbllowing
