About PICNIK （ Program for InterCultural Nexus In Kyoto ）

PICNIK is a program that receives requests from elementary and junior high schools in Kyoto City and arranges for international students to visit these schools and participate in classes. This program is the perfect opportunity for international students to meet and interact with Japanese teachers and children on a first hand basis while they are in Japan.

Would you like to teach children in Kyoto about the culture and lifestyle of people in your country?

Programs at elementary schools:

a. “Multicultural Exchange Program”

International students play and interact with school children.

b. “Cultural Presentation Program”

International students present information about their home culture’s customs and society using textbooks and other related teaching materials.

c. “Multicultural Understanding Program”

This program will make use of international student’s special skills and areas of expertise.

Programs at junior high schools:

a. Children and international students study topics together at integrated studies class (e.g. environmental studies, gender equality etc.)

b. Children study each school subject along with international students. (e.g. history, geography, music etc.)

c. Children learn about the life styles of other countries and areas from international students.

d. International students participate in school events.

※Registration is necessary in order to participate in PICNIK. The requirements and registration procedures are listed below.

Program Duration

This program will run between Thursday 1st June, 2017 and Sunday 25th March, 2018.

Requirements for Registration

1. Individuals who understand the principles of the program and have a strong desire to participate.

2. International students, graduate students and research students who are currently enrolled at a University in Kyoto are eligible for this program.

3. All international students are eligible regardless of age, sex, nationality, and school year or major.

4. The ability to speak conversational Japanese.

Regarding Transportation and Preparatory Costs

Transportation and preparatory costs will be refunded to international students by the school after the class has finished. We allocate ¥5,000 (tax included) per person to cover the cost of transportation to the class and any preparatory meetings. This amount remains the same regardless of the number of meetings.

The PICNIK coordinator will contact you with an offer to visit a school. The program will run from Thursday 1st June, 2017 up until Sunday 25th March, 2018.

Pre-meeting with the school and PICNIK coordinator

Place: Kyoto International Community House

The following points will be discussed at the meeting:

・ Reconfirm the content of the class (purpose of the class, class content, pre-class preparations and so on)

・ Preparation for the class （e.g. PPT presentation）

・ Time schedule for the class

・ Materials needed for the class (e.g. traditional costumes, photos, toys )

・ Transportation and preparation costs

Notice

1. Please inform the PICNIK coordinator immediately if you experience any trouble with your assigned school. We would appreciate your sincere reaction in the case of unexpected circumstances.

2. It is unacceptable to cancel a class except for extenuating circumstances. If there’s any possibility of cancellation, please talk with the coordinator.

3. You must enroll in Damage Insurance at the time of your registration. (The PICNIK coordinator will pay your premium.) Please inform the coordinator if you have a traffic accident on the way to the school or accidentally damage any equipment at the school.

Our policy about your personal information

1. Only the PICNIK coordinator will have your registration information.

2. PICNIK will not disclose information to other parties except for use in the PICNIK program. Also, we may send you announcements about events related to international students.
