Hello to all!
Hideki Matsuzaki, Mayor of UrayasuThis year’s Urayasu Sanja Festi-val was the most exciting ever, and it thrilled festival-loving Urayasu to the highest extreme.
I remember what the director of the Safety Section of the Urayasu Police Station once told me, “I have worked at a lot of police departments throughout Chiba Prefecture, but in this city, there are events every week! This is the first police department I have ever worked at where there is no holiday on the week-ends.”
One of the most unique characteris-tics of Urayasu is the rapid growth of its population. For seven consecutive years from 1978, the growth rate was the highest in Japan, and the population increased by almost 10,000 per year during this period.
The growth of communities of people who are new to the Urayasu area is still the main basis of city administration, even today.
Various events also play a role in encouraging friendly exchange among city residents.
This year marks the seventh year of the Urayasu Festival, which began one year before the Great East Japan Earth-quake. Originally, this event began when a suggestion was brought in by a resident volunteer.
Re-reading the proposal of the time, it seems that it all started when this volunteer—who was involved in the Honolulu Festival, which is the biggest cultural exchange event in Hawaii— wondered whether a similar event could be held in Urayasu.
In the landfill areas of Nakamachi and Shinmachi, there are no shrines— which are traditionally the base of festivals—and the idea came from a desire to create an event that would give residents the feeling of “Urayasu as a hometown,” regardless of whether they are originally from Urayasu or not.
An executive committee was then organized, and at the first festival held on September 19, 2010, Urayasu City
cooperated in all aspects, and the first part included a parade with Mickey Mouse & friends; the second part in-cluded a dancing parade by the Urayasu Women’s Association; and the third part included the Hirosaki Neputa, the towering Tachi-Neputa of Goshogawara measuring 20 meters in height, the Dai-jayama of Omuta, which also partici-pates in the festivities of the Honolulu Festival, and the Saitama Ryujin of Saitama, making the event even more exciting than anyone imagined.
The second festival was called the “Urayasu Restoration Festival,” due to the occurrence of the Great East Ja-pan Earthquake. The parade centered on student marching bands and baton twirlers. With the UK’s Band of the Coldstream Guards coincidentally visit-ing Japan at the time, they were able to adjust their schedule to join our festival and became the talk of the town.
Shin-Urayasu Festival, which used to be held in the Shin-Urayasu Station area, became part of the Urayasu Festi-val last year, and the Meikai University area was also added.
This year, the opening parade will kick off the festival, and the second part will include the regular partici-pants such as the traditional Eisa
danc-ers of Okinawa, the samba dancdanc-ers of Asakusa, and the Sendai Sparrow Dance dancers. Newly joining this year are the Awa-Odori of Tokushima, the
Hanagasa Dance from Yamagata, and the Hakata Dontaku, adding to the va-riety of our festival. Together with the dancing parade featuring the participa-tion of city residents, this year’s event is sure to be exciting.
The third part, consisting of parade floats, will be the climax of the festival, with the inclusion of floats from the “Three Main Festivals” of Tohoku: the Sendai Tanabata Star Festival, Akita Kanto Festival, and Aomori Nebuta.
Enjoy the weekend of September 17 and 18, with the excitement of Urayasu Festival 2016!
