About 25 days left until New Year! Are you excited? I am very thrilled and excited because this is going to be my first time celebrating New Year in Japan. When I was in Australia, I used to go to Sydney Harbour Bridge and watch fireworks with my friends on 31st December. Australia is located in the southern hemisphere so Australia is one of the first countries in the world to welcome the New Year! This year, I am going to follow the Japanese tradition of making New Year mochi soup, sending New Year’s cards to my family and friends, visiting a temple or shrine and buying a sealed bag of goodies (‘fukubukuro’).
Only a few weeks left until 2016 so let’s make the most of it :)

Happy New Year everyone!
I hope you all had a good New Year’s Day! This is my first time celebrating the New Year in Japan and I am excited to see how Japan celebrates the New Year! In America, everyone has a New Year’s party and stays up late. Family and friends come to the party, and they have a lot of music and food. In New York, many people go to Times Square to watch the countdown. I never go because it is so cold and there are too many people! But they always show the countdown on TV, so people at home can watch too!

Did you start 2016 in a good mood?
The other day, someone asked me what French people do on New Year’s day. I answered: “Nothing”. That may sound strange, but indeed, in most European countries, people party on New Year’s Eve until very late. So on the first, after having much eaten and drunk, people sleep late and stay quiet. We don’t have to visit our families since we did it at Christmas. What is common with Japan is all shops and offices closed on the 1st. But there’s no bargain sales on the 2nd, like the Japanese “Hatsuuri”. Will you go to “Hatsuuri” this year?
