Upon Leaving the University

MOROHOSHI Yutaka

I beg you to forgive me for writing this in both English and Japanese since it turned out to be much shorter than was requested.

Ordinarily in a writing like this, most people would describe his/her activities, achievement which one could be proud of or not so proud of, highs and lows of his/her career, all that plus “thank you” to many whom one worked with and made it possible for him/her to happily retire from the position.

I am no exception in that I was able to engage in numerous activities, achievement both positive and not so positive because of a great team of people whom I enjoyed working with, and I would extend my sincere thanks to those colleagues at J.F. Oberlin.

I am not, however, the type of individual to dwell on what happened or what I did during a certain period my life because they are nothing but an extension of all the things I did throughout the world prior to arriving at the University, and they are certainly not the last series of activities which I embark on after leaving the school. I only ask one question, “what is fun working at the university?” My answer is “yes it was” but I had more fun outside of the school, which was possible because I was a professor at the university.

Therefore, I just would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the University who gave me the opportunities to contribute to the betterment of the school and those who helped me as I undertook the venture.

From here on, my life will take up a new dimension and I am committed to making it as stimulating and fruitful as ever just as Gen. Doug MacArthur said, “old soldiers never die but just fade away”.

Thank you and good-bye. Yutaka Morohoshi

Douglas MacArthur.
