Water management inside a polymer electrolyte fuel cell has been regarded as one of the most important issues to be addressed. This is because both a shortage of supplied gases in highly humidified areas and a decrease in ion conductivity in low humidified areas cause deterioration in power generation performance and material durability. In this paper, intensive studies were conducted using a single cell visualization setup regarding investigations on how the water droplet behavior in the cathode channel varies depending on the channel cross-sectional aspect ratio, the wettability of the channel wall and the operating conditions. The visualized water droplet behavior was analyzed in conjunction with the output voltage and the measured upstream and downstream pressures. The basic water droplet characteristics, such as the discharge frequency, the velocity and the diameter, were also investigated with the PTV method. PTV G :;r. If>!.
