2010 Japan Fest Craft Sale

Masako Lastrapes

Thank you very much for the ladies who made craft for sale. We started preparing early to make much more craft products than the last year. We had gathered on every first Saturday of the month since February at 10:30 am and worked until 12:00 noon, then enjoyed lunch at Kyoto II. Mr. Sakamoto was so generous to let us use the shop before opening time. Thank you.

We were able to make many origami craft such as kusudama, flowers, and mobiles and fish with gift wrapping tapes. We made many bookmarkers as usual. Also one of us made Zokin with old yukata.

On the day of the Fest, we started early in the morning to exhibit and decorate to ready for selling. In addition to the craft group, ladies for calligraphy joined us. Like every year, bookmarker with your name written in Japanese were the most popular products. Many people asked us that is there any place they can learn how to make origami. If we can provide for such demand, it would be wonderful opportunity to introduce a part of Japanese culture to the community. It would be worth to think about it.

In spite of good preparation, we could not sell as much as the last year. Attendees for the fest might have been smaller than the last year. We will start preparation for the next year as soon as the new year starts. Anybody who are interested in craft making are welcome to join us. If you have suggestion for more Japanese craft, please let me know.

Tea Club Activity Report

Katie Arimura

We gave presentation of tea ceremony in the same manner as last year. Mr. Bob Turner helped us delivering TATAMI and the golden screen as he has been. We all appreciate his assistance in this regard. After preparation for the demonstration, members changed to KIMONO in a room down stairs. The first demo started at 11:00am. With the golden screen the setting looked attractive. Although we could not enjoy such quiet moment as in an isolated tearoom, we were able to introduce what tea ceremony is about. Though smaller attendance than last year people showed interest and had good questions and answers. The festival being Saturday, some members were not able to attend full day due to their schedule. If the festival were on Sunday these problems will be solved.
