Transitivity in Palauan:

with a special focus on the so-called Perfective and Imperfecive verbs

* Michinori SHIMOJI

The goal of this study is to examine the transitivity of two kinds of verbs in Palauan (a Western Malayo-Polynesian language spoken on a Micronesian island called Palau), namely what have been referred to in previous studies as “perfective transitive verbs”

(henceforth Perfective verbs) and “imperfective transitive verbs” (henceforth Imperfective verbs). I will show, for the first time in the literature of Palauan grammar, that the Perfective verbs and the Imperfective verbs contrast primarily in transitivity, with the former exhibiting a higher morphosyntactic and semantic transitivity than the latter. Morphosyntactically, the Perfective verb is a transitive verb with the object argument (which triggers the pronominal agreement suffix on the verb), while the Imperfective verb is intransitive with the non-object argument (without triggering agreement) or with only the S argument. Semantically, the Perfective verb typically requires a highly affected Undergoer (i.e. a patient role), while the Imperfective verb may involve a less affected Undergoer such as a theme role. Thus I will conclude this study by pointing out that there is a clear morphosyntactic reflection of semantic transitivity in the verbal system involving the Perfective and Imperfective verbs. In the addendum following the conclusion, I will explore how the new insights brought by my research will be related to the future research topics of the Palauan grammar. Among these is the possibility where the Perfective and Imperfective verbs will be better described in terms of voice contrastive system. Above all, I will refer in some length to ergativity in Palauan, which has been still beyond the horizon in the previous studies.
