The Japan Foundation London Language Centre

The Japan Foundation London Language Centre (JFLLC) supports the teaching of Japanese in the UK through its series of courses, grant programmes, advisory service and specialist library and resource centre. We now have one vacancy in our advisory team. (For the current vacancy in our programming/administration team, please see www.jpf.org.uk/language/.)

Job Description – Japanese Language Advisor

Japanese Language Advisor

Salary: £25,000 - £27,000 depending on experience

You will provide support and advice to teachers involved in primary and secondary level Japanese taught at UK schools. The successful candidate will be a qualified teacher with a minimum of 3 years’ experience of teaching Japanese in the UK and an in-depth grasp of language teaching methodology, and the current issues that affect Japanese, accreditation, resources and the UK education system.

You should have excellent spoken and written communication skills in English, and Japanese equivalent to Level 2 or higher of the Japan Foundation’s Language Proficiency Test. You should also have an awareness of the specific issues facing teachers for whom Japanese is not their native language. The role also includes taking on the watching brief at the Centre for examinations and curriculum related matters and contributing to workshops and the JFLLC website. One of the core areas to be taken care of by the successful candidate will be the development of primary resources for Japanese, so a special interest and drive to work in this particular field is crucial. A second (or third) foreign language such as French or Spanish would be a bonus. Knowledge of and an interest in ICT and course design would be an advantage. Initiative, energy and excellent administrative skills are essential.

Applicants should send a CV and covering letter to the address below, stating the name of the position they are applying for, and outlining their experience and suitability, no later than Monday 22nd September 2008.
