A study of the use ef mutually interchangeable demonstrative prenouns in
Kerean and ChiRese learners ef Japanese−Foc腿si韮g o鞭重薮e田縫濾鞍餓cIio副SO・A de脚nstrat董ves・

This paper exarnines how Korean and Chinese leayners use japanese KO−SO−A demonstrative
where japanese inforrnants claim that several variants are possible. The results of the analysis may be sttmmarized as follows:(1) Language transfer is most significant in beginners; (2) 9ifferences in the use of KO−SO−A demenstratives between Korean and Chinese }earners diminish. and almost
vanish, as the level gets higher; (3) ln Korean leamers, great differences were observed between learngrs at differeRt levels of Japanese proficiency. ln Chinese ieamers, however, there was almost no difference. (4) Both Korean and Chinese learners are influenced by the contrastive ttse of SO and A demenstratives, i.e. by rules in Japanese; (5) LearBers of Japanese (especially Koreaps) are
2nfluenced both by rules in Japanese and in their native language. At the beginfiing level, the influence of native rules ;s stronger, but as learning advances, it is gradually overridden by the influence of Japanese rules.
