SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT

AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The 20

th

International Symposium of the International Society for Skiing Safety will be

held in the Patagonian city of San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina from 4

th

-10

th

August

2013 in association with the International Society for Traumatology and Winter Sports

Medicine (SITEMSH). The meeting will take place at the heart of the city at the

picturesque Edelweiss Hotel. Bariloche offers a phenomenal travel experience for

delegates and their families as well as world class skiing on Cerro Catedral (Cathedral

mountain) which is one of the most important ski resorts in South America.

Papers are now invited on all aspects of snow sports safety including (but not limited to) injury epidemiology, management, rehabilitation and prevention, equipment design and

safety standards, ski patrol/ski area management and biomechanics. Contributions are particularly welcome from research students and those attending their first ISSS

conference.

Abstracts should follow the guidelines outlined below, and be submitted by email to [email protected] to arrive no later than 2359 GMT on 28th February 2013. All

abstracts will be subject to review by the ISSS 2013 Scientific Committee.

Abstract guidelines

All abstracts should be submitted in English and in Microsoft Word format.

 Preferred font – Times New Roman, size 10.

Set all margins (top, bottom, right and left) at 2.5cm

 Each abstract should have a title in bold centred at the top of the page

This should be followed two lines down by the author(s) name(s) and affiliations

The presenting author should be identified by an asterisk (*)

 The text of the abstract should be no more than 400 words and follow the format below:

 Introduction

 Materials/Methods

 Results

 Conclusions

 If results are not yet available, please send your abstract at this time stating “results not yet available”. We will require that results are submitted to the Scientific Committee for scrutiny by the end of June 2013.

 Please remember that oral presentations will be subject to a time constraint. If necessary, consider splitting your work into two separate abstracts

 Abstracts may be considered for poster sessions at the meeting. Please indicate if the abstract is for oral presentation (Powerpoint) or poster presentation

 Abstracts should be submitted as an email attachment to [email protected]

 Please name your attachment “authorsname.doc” If submitting more than one abstract, please use the format authorsname1.doc, authorsname2.doc etc

SACHICO YAHASHI MEMORIAL PRIZE

In memory of Sachico Yahashi, a prize will be awarded to the best paper/presentation given by a young presenter at the meeting as judged by the ISSS Scientific Committee. The value of the prize will be US$1000. The result will be announced and the award presented at the conference dinner on Friday, 9th August 2013. The judges’ decision will be final.

ISSS STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

The Board of The International Society for Skiing Safety invites applications from undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral students or teams of students to apply for a scholarship to support travel to and attendance at ISSS scientific congresses. The next meeting will be held from 4-10 August, 2013 in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina.

The aim of the scheme is to encourage interest in and research into snow sport safety by new and emerging researchers, support networking between researchers and promote membership of the ISSS.

A total fund of US$5,000 is available which may be split between more than one recipient. The final

decision on the exact division of the funds available rests with the ISSS Board. For more information, please see the separate information sheet on ISSS Student Scholarships or visit www.isssweb.com

Scheme Details

The scholarship will comprise conference registration, and funding support to help cover travel and accommodation expenses plus membership of ISSS for two years.

To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, the applicant (or team of applicants) must:

 Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate, Masters or doctoral student ;

 Have submitted one or more abstract/s (based on their studies), with the student/s as the primary author/s, to the ISSS 2013 conference;

 Submitted abstracts must follow the required format for the conference as advised in the formal call for papers;

 Have the abstract accepted by the conference scientific committee;

 Provide a supporting statement from their supervisor supporting their application. Deadlines, Application and Selection

 Please complete the application form attached to these guidelines.

 Signatures must be original and the relevant forms scanned for electronic transfer

 Please submit the application to [email protected] on or before 1 March 2013.

 The award will be made on the merit of the paper, to be decided by a committee of the ISSS Board in conjunction with the relevant Conference Scientific Committee.

 Conference registration is non-transferable.

 Applicants will be notified no later than 15 April 2013 on the outcome of the application.
