GCOE Joint Symposium between

Kyushu University and Tokyo University

The second annual joint symposium between Kyushu University and The University of Tokyo was successfully held in The Kyushu University 50th memorial hall on the 4-5th of February, 2011.

The symposium was aimed to meet together and exchange ideas among the students and staffs of the GCOE program. More than 70 people attended this symposium. On the first day, the leader from each University, Prof. Tetsukazu Yahara and Prof Izumi Washitani gave an overview of the current year’s activities. Then the annual reports about the six core sites were given by the GCOE project staffs. These talks were very useful to know what was going on at each core site. All talks were given in English in order to invite international students for discussion. The titles of these are as follows:

 13:00-13:30 Tetsukazu Yahara “Global COE program, Asian Conservation Ecology as a Basis of Symbiotic Society: Achievements and challenges”

 13:30-14:00 Izumi Washitani and Takehito Yoshida “Activity report of University-of-Tokyo group”

 14:00-14:30 China. Yuichi Kano “Fish biodiversity and conservation in the Tiaoxi River, China –A report of the field course in China–”

 14:45-15:15 Cambodia. Hironori Toyama “Plant diversity in permanent forest plots of Cambodia”

 15:15-15:45 Yakushima. Yusuke Onoda “Plant species diversity and trait diversity in the Yakushima island” / Lina Kawaguchi “A Colorless but Colorful Character in Forest Floor: Mitrastema yamamotoi”

 15:45-16:15 Ito Campus. Shin Nishida

“Satellite tracking of the black-faced spoonbill and molecular phylogeographic study of the horseshoe crab(s)”

 16:15-16:45 Mongolia. Tomoo Okayasu “Nonequiliubrium characteristics in Mongolian arid rangeland”

 16:45-17:15 Mikata Lakes. Hirohiko Takeshima “Genetic composition of crucian carp (Carassius auratus) populations in and around Lake Mikata”

On the evening of the first day, the banquet was held in the Faculty Room in The 50th memorial hall. More than 50 students/staffs were there. With a plenty of foods, and drinks people enjoyed talking with people from different groups and built good networks. One example was that some students from Kyushu University were interested in the field activities of Tokyo University, and Prof Washitani offered and recommended them to attend the activities. Such network is hardly built without direct conversations between people.

On the second day was devoted mainly for RA (Research Assistant) to introduce their research. Again all talks were given in English. This was not only for the international students but also for RA themselves because giving an English presentation is necessary for the international conference and discussion with people from other countries. We expected that English presentation could hamper understanding of the presentations to some extent for Japanese. After all, I think they made reasonably well. There were a few RAs who were fluent in English but most of them were not, but still they gave good presentations. The result of inquires about the symposium revealed that 68% of people thought that we should continue the English presentation style for the next year. See the appendix for more detail.

Prof. Tsukamoto and his colleagues

collected naturally laid eggs of a

freshwater eel for the first time

Prof. Katsumi Tsukamoto, one of the GCOE program members, and his colleagues have succeed in collecting naturally spawn eggs for the first time. Eels are very popular food in Japan as well as other countries, but their ecology remains mysterious. Their small leaf-like larvae called leptocephali have been found in the Western North Pacific, thousands kilometer away from the rivers where they become adults. However, their eggs have never been found in nature. Prof. Tsukamoto and his colleagues collected eggs in the ocean about 2,200 kilometers south of Japan near the West Mariana Ridge. This discovery helps to unveil the ecology of eel. An article on the research was published in the online Nature Communications on Feb. 1, 2011. Major medias and Newspapers broadcasted this news.

The global patterns of leaf mechanical

properties

Dr. Yusuke Onoda, a GCOE program staff, compiled more than 2800 species data of leaf mechanics data from around the world with 27 international scientists. They uncovered the global patterns of leaf mechanical properties for the first time. One of the major finding was that they rejected the long-standing hypothesis. Leaves from tropical climates have been believed to be mechanically more resistant than those from temperate climates due to evolutionary response to higher herbivory pressures. Their world largest dataset, more than ten times bigger than previous ones, succeeded in testing this hypothesis rigorously. They

found that

temperature hardly affected leaf mechanical properties but low precipitation was associated with more resistant leaves. This study was published in Ecology Letters on January 26, 2011, and also released in several newspapers.

Feedbacks

from

participants

of

Cambodia forest tree diversity field

course

(Tsuyoshi Kajisa)

The Cambodia forest tree diversity course was conducted in

Kampong Thom

province, Cambodia from 15 to 29 November 2010. The diversity of functional traits of tree

species within different forest types was surveyed. We got feedbacks from the participants of this field course: Hiroki Itadani (Laboratory of Insect Natural

Enemies, Graduate School of bioresource and bioenvironmental sciences), Yuuya Tachiki (Mathematical Biology Laboratory, Graduate School of Systems Life Sciences), and Ayumi Katayama (Laboratory of Ecohydrology, Graduate School of bioresource and bioenvironmental sciences).

Q1. Why do you choose Cambodian forest field course?

HI: I am interested in conservation of tropical monsoon forest and agricultural fields of Southeast Asia, so that I want to watch this real environment. Also, I like colorful butterflies and beetles in Kingdom of Cambodia.

YT: I have been interested in the tropical seasonal forest.

AK: In master course, I studied about carbon cycling in tropical rainforests in Borneo. Therefore, I wanted to visit tropical seasonal forests, like in Cambodia.

Q2. What did you do during the field course? HI: I made plant specimens, measured thickness of leaves, took samples for DNA bar-coding and wrote field note.

YT: Correcting samples of trees.

AK: Mainly, I collected samples of leaves to examine DNA, chemical characteristics and SLA.

Q3. How was the field course?

HI: Motivations of the other students and staffs to survey and conserve forests stimulated me, so that I got many motivations to researches. I hope to join conservation of Southeast Asia fields as researcher. Also, Cambodian foods were very tasty, we enjoyed various vegetables, meat, fishes and insects. Especially, coconut eel soup was fantastic taste! YT: There were a lot of impressive occasions (foods, life of local people and traffic, as well as vegetation of forest). I thought that we need to study not only forest but also social problems to conserve forest plants.

AK: It was very happy for me to have the chance to observe various kinds of plants, flowers and insects because I didn’t have enough time in my research study. Also, leaves and insects, which we observed in forest, were often served for our dinner. These foods always surprised us and realized that forest ecosystem and local people life were related closely. We actually saw some fields and rubber plantations where the forests used to be. I wish that we can find the way to satisfy both conservation of forest ecosystems and improvement of their living.
