Doctors

I’m sorry to say that I don’t have a good opinion of British doctors. Well, that is not exactly true. You see, it’s the system that I don’t like, not the people who work in it. The National Health Service (NHS) in Britain is a wonderful idea that gives medical care to all people free, or at least quite ( 1 ).

The problem is that the system has logjams*1. Patients have to wait hours to receive a short consultation with the doctor, and then they have to put up with another long wait to get their medicine. If they need treatment, their waiting period might ( 2 ) for weeks, months, or even years.

The NHS problem is compounded by the local family doctor*2 system. You are only allowed to see one GP*3, who you have to register with. If that doctor is unable to solve your problem, he or she might tell you to go to a ( 3 ) at a hospital or tell you to come back again—and again.

A good friend of mine had had backache for a long time. She even found it difficult to walk, which came as a shock to her since she had always been a very active person. The doctor prescribed a cream and some painkillers. After a couple of years with no improvement in her condition, she eventually had MRI scans that revealed that she had a degenerated hip joint. Needless to say, she had to wait another year for her hip-replacement operation. Since her problem was not life-threatening, she was at the bottom of the waiting list. Today she is mobile once again, and much happier, but she ( 4 ) having wasted all those years waiting.

Japan has a much different approach to treatment. Here, you can choose which local doctor you want to see, which means that you can pick ( 5 ) a specialist for your sickness. Your local clinic most likely has beds where patients can begin receiving treatment. You can have X-rays, injections, drips, blood tests, and rehabilitation all under the same roof. All of this makes the local clinic similar to a convenience store—but for medical complaints.

THE OLYMPIC GAMES

The Summer Olympic Games took place this summer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Olympics have been hosted by Mexico before, but it was the first time for a South American country. The very first Olympic Games were held in Greece almost 3,000 years ago. However, the ‘Modern Olympics’ took place for the first time in 1896. The Greek City of Athens was chosen as host because the ‘Story of the Olympics’ began there. The official name for the Rio Olympics was the

‘Games of the 31st Olympiad’.

The Summer Olympics have taken place once every four years since then, except for the years 1916, 1940 and 1944, during the two World Wars. The first Winter Olympics were in France in 1924 and they were held in the same years as the summer games until 1992. Since then, there have been Olympics once every two years, alternating between Summer and Winter Games.

The host city of each Olympics is chosen many years before they take place to give the cities enough time to prepare. The next Summer Games will, of course, be in Tokyo, in 2020. The host of the 2024 Olympics will be chosen in September next year and the choice is between Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris. The next Winter Games will be in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in 2018 and four years after that in Beijing, China. Beijing will become the first city to host both the Summer and the Winter Olympics. The location of the games and the sports that will be included are chosen by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

This year, there were more than 11,000 sportsmen and sportswomen from 207 countries and regions, competing in 306 events in 28 different sports. However, these numbers are not the same for every Olympics. Only 14 countries took part in the first modern games in 1896 and some countries, for example, Kosovo and South Sudan, competed for the very first time this year.

The famous ‘five colored rings’ symbol has been used on the Olympic flag at every games since 1920, but each city can also choose symbols or mascots for their own particular games. Rio de Janeiro chose a character called Vinicius, named after a famous musician, as their mascot. The official Olympic Motto, ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’, comes from the Latin words ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius’. Again, however, each city can choose its own slogan, and for the Rio Games it was ‘A New World’.

(9)

countries, took part in the Rio Paralympic Games.

Before the television age, the only people who could watch the Olympics ‘live’ were those who were actually at the venues. It is now very different. The Olympics are the world’s biggest sporting event and are seen on television by more people in more countries than any other.

A: Where do you think we should take our vacation this year?

B: Well, we’ve been abroad the last few times but I’m afraid our budget is a bit tight this year.

A: I see. Then how about visiting some big city closer to home that we haven’t been to before?

B: That’s OK, but I’d prefer to go some place where there aren’t so many people. A: Actually, I think you’re right. We could go to a National Park.

B: That’s a good idea. And it wouldn’t cost so much.

A: Then let’s do that for a change. Shall we drive there? We could share the driving.

B: We could, but it’d be less stressful to go by bus.

A: Right! Then, I’ll start checking out some routes and timetables.

B: No, let me do that and you can look around for some maps and guidebooks. A: No problem. We still have lots of time.

B: Shall we ask your brother and his wife to join us again? A: We can’t this time. She’s expecting again, remember? B: Oh yes, I’d forgotten. When is the baby due?

A: In about five months, I think, around the middle of September. B: Right. Then let’s take our time and plan a really nice vacation. A: Mmm. It will be good to see more of our own country!
